I figured this out too. I've seen these same rivets in electronics manufacturing as well. That middle nail just spreads the outer part tight.

You are welcome. It was my pleasure to serve. I would have made it a full 20 years, but I ended up with a medical discharge at 9 years 10 months. :(

My entire grill and bezel are plastidipped and have held up for a year and a half.

If I had to do it again I would use the Harbor Freight Iron Armor bed liner spray. It is much more durable, but definitely permanent. I sprayed the insides of my skids with it, and my Spork.

You got it! I once watched an instruction video on the tube and the guy sounded so bright at first. Then he destroyed two of the inserts. I looked for another video.

Thanks. It was literally the first time I ever derped anything. I watched some vids for that too. I did in the winter, 50 degrees in my garage. Used the wifes hair dryer to speed up drying times. Heated the can in a pail of hot water in between. 7 coats, and then 4 coats of glossifyer (also made by Plastidip).

That Harbor Freight stuff has a real nice sheen to it and little more texture than plastidip. If I don't even buy a mes grill I am gonna pressure wash the derp off and do it over with that.It will likely require more prep. I will just use coarse steel wool and go over the entire grill with that first. Then a coat or two of primer. Just because.

Any time you paint something, even plasti-dipping, it's all about the prep. With the derp all you need to do is clean very good. Alcohol clean. And take your time and do light coats. The kind you can still see the base after 2 or 3 of them. Thinner coats will always provide better results in the end. Patience is the key. And beer, or margaritas. If you have to go make more margaritas it allows things to dry fully and helps calm your nerves.

Edit - the spork paint job is just me being me, a little wacky.

If you have access to a sand/bead blaster, that helps paint adhere better than anything I've tried. With plastic items, I turn down the PSI of the blaster and make quicker swipes. Paint sticks to sandblasted surfaces like glue!

Hell yeah! That's definitely the way to go. Get's all those nooks and crannies too. If I had a bigger garage I would get a small booth thing. The one with the rubber gloves. Those are great. I derped my door badges and they came out really nice too. No prep but alcohol. I plan on doing a spare set I bought in the HF bed liner stuff. I'm going to steel wool those too first. I fear the bed liner paint will flake off that fake chrome finish. If I had a sand blaster I would remove the chrome. I read some stuff about using bleach to remove chrome paint off of plastic, on model (like cars and airplanes) forums. Suppose to work like magic. I might try it.

I hear ya. I went nuts with my aluminum skids.

After many hours of scuffing with sanding sponges, wire wheels and brushes I decided I will never do that again. I will pay for powder coating!

My outdoor primer booth, well, just area.

    20190324_170839.jpg

    Then it started raining.

    20190329_155053.jpg

I sprayed all the tight spots with the stuff I posted earlier and then rolled everything else with the same stuff HF sells in gallons too.

    20190329_162825.jpg

It went on the flat surfaces really nice, but is super thick, and no regard was given for looks.

    20190330_171400.jpg

The Diff Diaper and Transfer Case skid were used so they look a little rough. They looked a lot worse before I ground them smoother.

    20190331_183017.jpg

Everything turned out nicely, and then I found out the 2nd Gen Diff Diaper I bought, prepped, painted and slaved over, didn't fit 3rd Gens.

    20190331_185351.jpg

But like I said, never again. I will never go to this much trouble.

Gonna be getting a shell in the future and trying to figure out if black or color match inferno would be best. Any pics or advice would be appreciated. Probably gonna get one thats not cab height but has a little rise btw.

I hope I don't offend anyone, but personally, I think it looks like shit. I was going to go this route but will only color match.

Now, I know the Mid Rise is not everyone's cup of tea but I plan on buying one. For me the truck is a tool and not a status symbol. Believe me, I love the look a sleek cab high cap on this truck. It's just not gonna do for me what a mid rise will.

If you want something half and half, there is this and honestly, on an off road and cab high, Inferno, I would go with this.

So, me being the curious, want to know how and why things work the way they do, type of person, I went back and looked into this. Apparently I did not have to remove the 4 at the bottom. I think what happened was, when it didn't pull out I didnt want to force anything, so I looked and saw the 4 down below. By removing those it gave me the confidence to tug away, and so it went.
I edited my earlier post with the fact I did unnecessary work.
My wife said I was crazy for taking it off again just to look at something, but I didn't want to give out some bad info.
