Availability of manual transmission Tacomas is indeed limited. I test drove Off-Road in both manual and automatic: I had 10 times more choices if terms of color and equipment with an automatic than a manual. If I really wanted a manual, I couldn’t get the Premium nor the Tech Packages I wanted.

I was indifferent to some extent: I liked the manual, but I already own a stick shift Fiat Spider, so I could be convinced either way. I don’t recall if the combination I wanted wasn’t available from the factory or the dealer just couldn’t locate any. Either way, by elimination I was hearded towards an automatic. Had there been greater availability of manuals I may have ended getting one.

Yeah they are no doubt few and far between. I routinely checked dealerships near me for months looking to test drive one to no avail. Ended up calling many dealerships before I found one in another state with an MGM 7545 already allocated but a month out. They can be had but usually you have to go find it, which is what most MT owners do I think. A lot of MT owners on here went through similar processes.

I wanted Premium and Tech and Manual so I waited almost 4 months to get it, but was well worth waiting for.

    Lift and cap so far...
I was lucky enough to find a dealership with 2 in stock! They even had a manual pro on the floor when I went for my 5000 mile "service"

I also want the Manual, Premium and Tech package. Called 10 dealer and only one was willing to order the truck for me without asking for over sticker price. Toyota does not build a special order truck. The dealer has to wait until the combination of what you want comes off the line and request that truck be sent to them. My Tacoma took also 4 months wait time but the manual was well worth it.

The ability to drive a MT is dying. And with it, the demand for MT vehicles. It's a sad thing.

I think it is a combination of factors. On the one hand, automatic transmissions have become faster and more efficient; on the other drivers have more distractions inside the vehicle —i.e., cellphone calls and texts, streaming music, etc.

I was surprised the MPG numbers of the MT are actually lower than those of the AT. Based on my test drive, the MT seems to have much lower gearing.

It is geared lower. 4.3 vs 3.9 in the rear differential. But that's not even the whole story. 5th in the auto is higher than 6th in the MT.

By their logic, they don't make an MT DCLB because sales for the MT DCLB have been zero.

Still, that is 12,500 MT Tacos sold per year. Nothing to sneeze at.

Curious if Toyota will offer a manual transmission option on the 4th generation Tacoma. Also, I never heard a valid reason why the current Tacoma DC long bed is not available with a manual tranny. Can the current manual transmission not handle the extra weight of a long bed?
