It's not about driving fast as much as it is having the power to safely navigate traffic. You would be fine riding around city or country roads, but a 300 does not have power to navigate the highway in a safe manner. There are times when my 2016 500F has trouble passing a vehicle; I can't imagine what it would be like on a 300.

Nice keep us posted. Make sure you wear all the gear all the time, not only will it save your ass it will also show your parents you're trying to be a safe/responsible rider.

What kind of ATV you got? I miss my quads... had a KFX450R and a 400EX. Sold them years ago when I moved away from my riding spots.

Honestly I went on the highway once with my 250 and it was terrifying. strictly backroads and small towns. no city driving no highway driving.

Yes I will certainly be as safe as possible. I stated before that I crashed once on my last bike and since then ive been really careful.

    I have a 2006 Honda Foreman 500 4x4 that I am working on selling.

Nothing to extravagant. I added black short levers, a fender eliminator kit & an OGIO tail bag to the 500F. I hardly ever take it out. It basically serves as a spare for my friends to ride. I'd rather invest in mods for one of my other bikes.

Yeah it does. Spray some slick, long lasting oil and cover it with pea gravel. The perfect combo to get you killed. Even when the lanes clear the gravel builds up in the middle, so hit that in a curve and you're going for a ride. Because the whole road is covered in gravel, you can't tell what is stuck into the road and what is loose until it moves.

I started on a Ninja 300 that I had for about 2 years. The most important aspect that I think was good that I started on a small bike was that it was very forgiving when you did make mistakes. I didn't have ABS and it was still very nice when I did make a mistake and the bike didn't launch from underneath me or it was too heavy to control.

I don't regret getting the 300 first, especially cause I got a 2 year old bike with 3000 miles on it for cheap and sold it for about the same price I bought it for two years later, and it taught me a lot before moving to the FZ. You'll get a lot of people ragging on you for getting a "girl's bike" or whatever, but just ignore them; get what you want and what you think will benefit you the most.

Much appreciated. Excellent information. Another forum member talked with me about the FZ and as nice as it looks, at the moment it’s just out of my price range. I’m also particular to Honda as they have never given me a single drivetrain issue.

Well the guy came and looked at my Honda Forman today. Says he will be back with his son tomorrow to have him try it out and seal the deal. Hope it all works out.

How bad was replacement? Left side is blown, found that out on my 9.5 hr ride.

I think something like the new Ninja 400 or even a SV650 would be do-able for a newer rider though if you did want to do some research on those. I've heard beginner riders get those kind of bikes and don't have issues with too much power; although they might be a bit heavier than a 300.

It's hard to recommend something over the internet without really knowing the other person's goals, riding ability, experience, etc. :)

Well this would be my third motorcycle. I had dirtbikes before as well. I had this 1971 Yamaha AT1 125 2 stroke on/off road bike. It was my dads first motorcycle and we got it back in the family and rebuilt the whole thing and i rode it for a couple years. This was it after we painted it up and everything. I got an offer on it we couldn't refuse and sold it. yeah I regret it.

I got a killer dealer on this 95 Honda nighthawk cb250. 711 miles on it when I bought it and it was basically brand new. picked it up for $700.

    I crashed this one...
    Capture1.jpg Capture2.jpg
... It was my own fault. I was going down a backroad and passing some farms and was looking out at the farm. I looked infront of me and found a small construction zone, the guys working went to lunch and put a big saw horse in front of where they were working. no signs or anything. Theres a small hill before it so I couldnt see it before hand. by the time i actually saw it, it was too late, I made the rookie mistake of locking up the brakes. crashed right into and flipped 2-3 times. Still have scars from this. Ive been off 2 wheels for about 4 years now and am ready to get back into it. I still consider myself a beginner rider but with a little experience at this point lol

I want the newest, lowest mileage bike I can get for my budget. I really like Honda's for their reliability and resale value. I think the CBR300R is the only thing that really falls into my category. maybe a Ninja 300 but that wont hold value as well.

even a ninja 400 I think would be a good compromise, you can always change the gearing so its not too peppy on the bottom end

That is true. I have such a hard time buying something that isnt a Honda. If I dont like it or out grow it I could sell it for the same money I bought it for. I dont think theres much to lose haha
