    Hey guys!

I live in Oregon in the Portland area. I'm looking to tow a small trailer or boat.

I'm about to make the plunge on my bank account to buy a used tacoma. My budget put me at around 25k -27k.

I'm looking at either a 2015 TRD sport, double cab, v6, tow package, 4x4, in graphite $27k(working on getting them down). Got a few dings and scratches a pretty good one on the tailgate and it smells like animal. It's a cpo.

The other is the 2013 TRD off-road, Double cab, v6, tow package, 4x4, silver, with a canopy which I want $27.9k (and I worked them down to $25.5k this one is much cleaner but not a cpo. I found out after getting them down to 25.5 they were initially referring to it as a cpo because I had thought it was. Then when it got down to it I found it was not.

I guess my question really is what do you guys think is the better deal? What's some things that are uncommon knowledge around those years? is a cpo gonna really be worth it? I can probably get $26k or less on the 2015. So I know the answer really probably is the 15' but I was hoping someone could convince me one way or another or if possibly I could get a few suggestions on a first time purchaser.

Thanks again for any who reply and sorry for the wall of text. I am anxious about all of this.

    Edit: sorry forgot the miles.
    77k on the 13' and
    64k on the 15'

Is the value is probably worth paying an extra 1-2 k on the prive tag for the 15?

Edit 2: I checked reviews and the dealership with the 15's dealership has some scathing reviews about their service department and a few bad customer service reviews. I also didn't spend much time at the 15's dealership because I was waiting on my ringer. I have a buddy who sold cars at a VW certified dealership come in with me for the experience.

Edit 3: oops. Last update. I swear. The 15' is the sport and the 13' is the off-road. Im tired. Updated the original text.

Last edit: I've been convinced mostly through more searching and looking at just used that I'm gonna keep searching. I appreciate the replies. This process blows. Can't wait to just drive my taco around.

    Welcome to TacomaWorld!

I don’t think you can go wrong with either. If you’re financing though, you can probably get a better interest rate on the 2015.

In my opinion given the price difference between the 2 the TRD off road is a better option, even if your not an off road type the added off road goodies are pretty cool to have , like the rear locker. The sport is in my opinion more of an appearance package (hood scoop), which may be your thing. It doesn't have all the extra goodies the off road does but it does have a "sport tuned" suspension.. If I had to do it again id just spring for an off road. Plus its newer.

Edit: If the dings and smells are really going to bother you on the 15, you could also hold out for one in slightly better shape. Smells can usually be washed out, dings/ scratches for some people are a deal breaker. I totally get that, on the other hand my truck came with some dings and scratches when I bought it, I used to be anal about that stuff. Now it only makes me less pissed when I scratch it an more likely for me to use it as a truck.

Ouch. In that case, I think it comes down to which one you like more.

    Wholly sh%T!!!

I couldn't imagine taking a loan for 25+k at 14 % interest.. Would you consider getting something older for less $$? I cant imagine the interest rate being any worse.. I got my 2010 for 11.5 with 150k on it but the thing has been solid, no regrets.. Just food for thought. I don't know your situation.

    Appreciate the reply man.

I'm the same way, I could care less about the dings it's not really a deal breaker for me and I know of the wonderful scientific discovery of ozium. So its not a biggie either. Though it does kind of wreck the new experience for me. Semantics really.

The value of the 15' is a little closer to actual value too isn't it?

I definitely considered older I was really into the 2009 and 2010 years but I want to get the maximum reliability with cpo. Which again is why I'm starting to lean towards the 15' and you guys are definitely helping with that. Also I'm putting half on the down payment. I was approve for $12.5k

I think the price on the 15 is decent for an off road.. May vary depending on the mileage/ location.. But 27K range in my opinion is pretty much the typical market value for the year and trim level.

So you really want the certified stamp? I understand, when your dropping cash you want reliability and piece of mind. That being said, these truck are arguably some of the most reliable vehicles on the road. The older ones (pre 2011) main concern is the frame rust issues. Beyond that there are countless folks running them 200-300k mile plus of generally trouble free miles. There will always be exceptions.. One thing to note you can create a profile on https://www.toyota.com/owners/ and use the vin to check maintenance history, its free. I used this tool when searching used Toyota's, it will tell you if the truck has been serviced by the dealer. So if you found a 2009 but had an immaculate service history you know its taken care of.. Not trying to convince you of anything here but just giving a alternative perspective..

I have a 2015 OR/DblCab with 55,000 and love it. Awesome capabilities, fun to drive. I think i'd go for the 2015, but shop around 14.5% seems very high.

None of my business, but I'm curious how you have $14K in the bank and no credit. So, with no credit, you're either living with your parents, or living in a rented house. This thread has financial disaster written all over it. I'm no financial expert, but I've never made a mistake like you're about to walk into. Sorry for the harsh reality, but unless you can make a lot of money with your 14.9% interest purchase, buying any depreciating asset at that rate is stupid.

Welcome to TW...Both seem a little pricey to me but that might be typical for your area. Regardless of what price you agree on I think the 14.9% interest rate is outrageous. I don’t know your credit history but there has to be better options.

Nah man you're good. Ive worked for the last 9 months on a boat in Alaska making 4k or more while also living with my parents. It's about 4k over what I'd be paying if I payed outright. I know what I can afford and what my credit value is. The smart thing to do would be to get my credit up first but I'm a bit impatient.
