Check your complementary oil changes

Yesterday I took my truck in for its first Toyota complementary oil change. What I found, after I received the truck back, is while they did change the oil, they never changed the oil filter. I noticed the skid plate seemed untouched and when I removed it, I found the filter housing had road dust all over it. The finger prints you see are mine. As those who do their own oil changes know, it is impossible not to get the housing dirty when changing the filter.

They also did not check the cabin filter as it was full of leaves.


I have a call in the the service manager to discuss and I will call Toyota and lodge a complaint. So, beware of the 'free' oil changes gentlemen, and check your truck afterwards.

I trust my Dealer, seems unlikely But I feel no need to double check their work. 112k miles without an issue and great customer service, you should find a new dealer.

 

That sucks. I did my own oil change at 6500 and willbe going to the dealer for the 10k free oil change. I will know easily if the oil filter was changed or not because I used a different oil filter.

 

That’s my biggest fear to is the oil filter. That’s one of those thing 8 out 10 people would probably not notice. Luckily my last free oil change just happened so I’m on my own.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS double check work done to your vehicle. Dealer or regular mechanic. ESPECIALLY a dealer, especially one you have a good "relationship" with. They are in the business of making money, not maintaining a relationship

 

They are reviewing surveillance footage and talking to the tech. So, until I talk to the service manager and get a feel for how it happened, I am not going to put that info up. There is certainly a want to throw the dealer under the bus for 'cutting costs', but I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt at this time.

 

My dealer did no check the fluid levels in the diffs or Tranny, nor the cabin filter. Grease driveshaft, Tire pressure, Tread depth etc...
Tried to argue with me that it was not on the Toyota checklist....
Once I had them bring up the Toyota service maintenance checklist and they realized they were wrong...
their next question (and I shit you not) was, "are you going to pay for the gaskets and washers?".
I laughed and asked if they want me to forward their bill on to Toyota for reimbursement... what issues would that cause for them.... Lol

Check EVERYTHING the dealer does and is supposed to do.

 

NEVER used dealer for any maintenance. I use Amsoil and spin on filter (Baxter adapter). I changed the suspension all by myself, I think I know how to change oil and all fluids. Soon onto brakes.

 

Dealership are dangerous places. Do your own oil changes. I am sure if OP gets dealership to change filter. they will over-torque it so you can never get it off again.

 

And they wonder why I do my own tire rotations and set tire pressures. It takes me half an hour and I know the lug nuts are torqued to spec. When I picked up my truck new, twenty of the twenty-four lug nuts were loose, two were approximately right on and two were over tightened. I laughed when the initial inspection report said that the dude had actually check the tranny fluid level. When you know that didn't happen, you pretty much have to question everything else they do.

 

This is sad, especially considering how much we pay for these trucks.

 

So, OP, as far as you know, they just rolled in your Tacoma on one end and out the other without doing anything to it...?

OP, did you check and see if the oil looks cleaner? Not sure how well you'll be able see, but the oil should look fairly clean/clear if new.

 

I've only got about 2k on mine, but I've been pondering this. Especially for the first, I don't think I want to wait until 10k for an oil change, so I thought about doing one on my own at 5k. Maybe this is a good time to mark the filter and housing.

Is your dealer a close personal friend or family member? A one man operation with no turnover?
Don't be naive.

 

I do my own maintenance and don’t trust my dealer to do anything. The few times I’ve been in my dealers waiting room I’ve witnessed first hand service writers convincing customers they need all sorts of maintenance work on their vehicles. The service writers at my dealer are paid commissions and for that fact alone I don’t take their advice and encourage others to do the same. If someone is suggesting you need to pay for maintenance, ask if they’re working on commission. If they say yes, be very skeptical.
