Just started noticing the howl this weekend at 11666 miles (I know, right?)

Not really a 'howl' per say, more like a persistent whine. 57ish mph, feathering throttle. Noticed it in 4th 5th and 6th gears

 

I just got done riding around with a rep from Toyota. They have agreed to replace my differential as a good will gesture even though the truck may end up worse than before. We drove in three trucks today that all had some level of differential whine, however all were less obtrusive than mine and none of them had the low speed whine mine has. They are also going to fix my floppy hood. Hopefully I will end up with a better diff than before.

None of the trucks were perfect, but the speed the whine kicked in was either lower or higher than mine and at speeds you don't constantly run at.

The howl is finally gone!!! The TSB only reduced it. This knocked it out completely...NEW TIRES!

Actually, i think the tire noise is drowning out the howl. Not that these tires are all that loud. Least not as loud as KO2s imo.

 

I've still got the stock GY OR tires. Maybe my luck will change when I upgrade...

 

Shoot slap on some noisier tires and an exhaust thats just a little louder than stock... like an axle back...

General Grabber in 265 70 17 and they are just slightly louder then the Stock GY tires. Can’t hear the slight whine.
I really don’t think the tire noise is drowning out the noise, it’s not much louder. Possibly dampening the noise.?
Not sure and really don’t care.....before or now.

 

So I have a 2018 TRDOR M/T. Took it in for the howl and the leaking diff. Master tech rode along and confirmed that he was hearing the howl. I also mentioned the TSB about the diff whine. They checked it and found that my VIN didn't fall within the range, so they said they have to talk to the Toyota representative. The toyota representative said that these diffs are noisy diffs and since it doesn't fall within the range they want the dealership to do some investigation. Dealer called me back today. They fixed the leak my tightening up the bolts. Wrt to the howling, they said they folded up the tray cover and that somewhat dampened the noise, reported back the Toyota team and the Toyota team said that the noise is normal. I replied by saying that if you fold up the tray cover there would be more wind noise so that's why it would dampen the howl. She said they have to follow what Toyota tells them so the next option would be for me to call Toyota and make a case.

I've seen some posts here that say the 2018 model year is covered under the TSB, but the dealership/Toyota is telling me otherwise. Is there an updated TSB? Also people seem to be having mixed results with the TSB. Any thoughts on how I should proceed here?

 

I just left my car in shop yesterday. The technician noticed the noise immediately and they decided to change the rear differential.
I will update once I get it back.

 

I have the same config as yours. I had my local dealer apply TSB 0013-18 for the rear mounts only. The TSB has multiple levels of 'fix'. So, basically, they just installed improved isolators on the rear cab mounts. That fixed my issue about 90%. I still hear a small amount of whine now coming from the front cab mounts which were not upgraded. So, in the interest of completing the job, I am going to inquire about getting the front mounts changed (I assume they are the same as the rear).

 

I didn't realize the tsb covered both front and rear? I thought it was just the rear cab mounts.

 

Sorry, I wasn't clear. It doesn't, but it should because noise is also transmitted from the front mounts.

 

Here is the update on my truck noise.
For those who don't know, I have a 2019 TRD Offroad short-bed and it did not have any noise when I bought it.
Around 2k miles it started to make howling noise around 54-57mph when going downhill and you could make the noise by feathering throttle while keeping the same speed. After driving another 1000 miles or so, speed range that you could hear the howling noise changed to 53-59 mph depending on if I am going uphill or downhill.
My driving style had been non aggressive and I barely used 4wd other than minimum recommendation by factory(10miles/month).
There had been a lot of discussion in this thread about the noise source. Some debate that this is a "harmonics" or tires noise while other believe that the noise is actually coming from rear differential.
In my opinion they all can be the source but rear differential issue may be the source when you find the same symptoms as I did in my truck.
Anyways, after few months of hesitation I decided to take the truck to dealership and the technician noticed the noise immediately. To verify the test drive findings, they took the car in shop, lifted and drove in the air. They confirmed that noise is coming from rear differential.
They replaced the rear differential. In the shop report the mentioned that they found larger than normal metal shavings/pieces on magnetic drain plug.
Currently the noise is gone and I can say for sure that in my truck the noise source was rear differential.
I will drive the truck and make sure that the noise won't come back. According to "the real moondog" with the same issue and rear differential replacement, after 2k miles on his second differential the noise came back.
I will update after I drive 2k miles!

I am in the middle of the LL process. I’m about to invoke arbitration. I may or may not go through with it and might just sell it.

 

Sorry to hear that! Using lemon law requires to have three failed documented attempts to solve an issue, Am I right?

 

It depends on the state you are in. I have far exceeded my attempts. Also, define failed repair attempts. Sometimes manufacturers try to get cute and say something is “normal” and that it wasn’t a failed attempt. If you show up to the dealer, the truck makes it way back to the shop, and leave with the same issue, it’s a failed attempt. I even had a former dealer try to not document my visit on one I LL’d and I just took a pic of him and the shop. I won and they bought it back and then some. I’ve been an attorney over 20 years so I’m not that worried about the shenanigans. Toyota has been disappointing lately with regards to their lack of accountability for this issue. I plan to help them fix it. Best of luck to you but I won’t be able to talk about this issue for a while. Take care!
