When i have my hitch in the receiver and no trailer, it rattles louder than any other truck ive had under same conditions.
Do i just need a better quality hitch?
    any opinions?
(yeah i know, just dont use it when your not towing hahaha)

While I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, the u bolt type and this type

    https://www.hitchclamp.com

does not look like it would work on my factory reciever. Likely would work on a Curt or similar. Immediately behind the collar on the receiver I have there is a flat plate welded and would be in the way of either clamp.

Grease. It also helps with rust prevention.

Cedar shingle. Just drive it in between the receiver and the hitch.

I use to drive them in a barge that that sprang a leak. They would swell up and stop or slow down the leak until the barge was off loaded then sent to dry dock to have a steel plate welded over the crack.

Do you have MT ? Because i thought it was my hitch insert rattling. It was actually the noise from all the play in the tranny and driveshaft when going in neutral over bumps. Sounds like something loose. Just saying.:homer:

This was literally the first thing i noticed when pulling my truck (^MT by the way and it wasnt noise from the tranny) off the lot. I didnt make it 5 miles down the road and i pulled over and pulled my hitch out and put it under the rear seat. Never noticed it on the truck i left at the dealer (16 f150) Not a big deal to leave it out, but i cant stand rattles.

Hitch shouldn't make noise if it's got a trailer on it. And if it doesn't have a trailer on it, hitch won't make much noise if it's under the seat.

These are the correct answers, OP. Why do you need to leave the hitch installed if you aren't using it? Makes no sense.
