Happened on my little trailer, fortunately was in my driveway and it just hit my spare tire.

    Stuff. Also things.
If the Mini will let you handle things via your phone and Bluetooth, then I would definitely recommend one.

I have an older version from when they were made by DeLorme, and I love it. The month by month billing is a good option and the messaging is a game changer. The tracking feature is pretty awesome too.

Rakuten regularly has 15% and 20% off sales. I found out recently that the discounts work on the Garmin units.

By regularly, I mean at least once every two weeks.

Rakuten is like Amazon - They have different vendors.

Rakuten is in California, the vendor that sells that specific Garmin is probably in your state as well.

Try selecting a different vendor to get around the sales tax.

Search "Garmin InReach" and you'll see multiple results. Each different result is a different vendor. Play with the different selections and see which one doesn't charge sales tax.

REI supports the Seirra Club. If you enjoy keeping motorized access I suggest finding another vendor. If you hate anything with an engine by all means continue shopping at REI.

On the device alone, you can still send your pre-set messages, trigger an SOS, or (slowly) type out messages. It’s just easier/faster through the app on a paired phone.

Personally, I would go with the non-mini. I hate all the bullshit of pairing with Bluetooth (that never works well for me - even when my job was testing hardware I could rarely get it to pair)... The last thing I want in the wilderness is my phone not next to me and the InReach (or similar) and need the phone to actually use the device...

In reality, a real PLB is better off for most cases of real emergency... These "toy" PLBs are great if you have someone that is more comfortable with you in the outdoors when it continuously pings your location off to somewhere they can track where you're at.

Then you get shit like this of people overreacting when the device doesn't transmit the ping at the predefined schedule ... https://www.vernonmorningstar.com/news/backcountry-skiers-located-by-mabel-lake/

Hey, they don't just discriminate against motorized vehicles, they hate most mechanized transportation including mountain bikes.

I will say, from personal experience, being able to communicate two-way with SAR via the inReach is pretty darn useful.

True, but for someone that actually wants the best available a combo of HAM + PLB is likely to give you the best chances.

I understand most people don't even know what HAM is and just want one more little electronic device that just appeals to fears and sells the thought of safety (to really generalize it. I know they work well for a lot of people and I think it's useful, but I'm just giving the far end of the spectrum of opinions).

Preface - I am not a radio guy . That said, in the incident in which I used the inreach to communicate to SAR, the first official responder (Pitkin County Sherriff's deputy) was unable to get a response from his hand-held radio in our location (Radio in his vehicle ~100 yards away was able to). Would be curious what frequencies they'd operate at vs HAM, and how those might perform differently, though.
