The problem is the general questions.

There is so much to this, peak power, low/ mid power, 1,2,3,4,6 cylinders, off road or on road, motard, dual sport, hypermotard........

If you can get some direct wants it is easier to help steer him right. Year makes little difference, neither does production run.
Miles,mods,services,and type of owner make the biggest difference. I would not buy a bike without a full independent evaluation of needs of said vehicle.

There is no bad bike, they all just do somethings better than others.

A little bit of work like chain and sprockets or a matching set of tyres is to be expected and deducted for. You need a master Motorsport mechanic to check it out, let me know.

ST bikes were around way before Yamaha.......the Japanese were late on the scene. Just in case you want to know the history...

 

I get it, all I can say atm is he's looking at new bikes that he intends to ride on nice days to work (7mi in town) and on weekend cruises (paved backroads). Not looking to race, travel or be better than the next guy. Prob never do a single mod to it.

 

Price range and what he wants it to do then.

I like the MT-10 from Yamaha, the raider/warrior from Yamaha are bad ass,

The Kawasaki vaquero is to be avoided

Suzuki does not have much in cruiser bikes
M and C lines

Honda has one of the biggest stables of cruiser/touring/twin style bikes.

I think I still have access to factory info.

Help if I can, new is not always the best choice btw.

Better term would be race bikes or race replicas. Most ST bikes like the Speed Tripple are “crotch rockets” or “sport bikes”
