That's not quite true. Similar, but not identical. The shape is the same, but they added HSS to improve the crashworthiness. A lot of 2nd Gen mods work on the 3rd Gen.

 

Very true. I'd still like to see more from him or other folks at the company. It looks like he has been here since January though.

 

I'm guessing logistics reasons. Much easier for Toyota to keep the manual in a few configurations it knows will sell and keeps things less complicated in the factories manufacturing so many different configurations of the same vehicle.

 

Because the current 3rd generation, minus the drivetrain and dashboard, is basically a refreshed 2nd generation Tacoma. I believe the cab and the rear doors are identical.

Which makes sense, because the 3rd gens are having many of the same 2nd gen problems. Heck, I think someone said that rusting frames are showing up on 3rd gens as well.

 

Didn’t read the whole thread, but I agree if more MTs were out there, more would sell.

dealerships want to sell what’s on the lot, and there are very few MTs in the lots. When I walked into the dealership, I very clearly stated, I am only buying a manual transmission. Sales guys says, ok let’s take a look at what we have. We go walk the lot, not a single MT, and I bet the sales guy knew this. Cause he all but forced me to test drive the auto. I was able to wait, and thus ordered after the run around with sales, but how many can’t or won’t wait.

Oh and even though it’s not much, yota makes more $$$ with autos.

 

Sorry I have to disagree, in the 3rd gens the manual is the way to go. Was the 2nd gen MT better, ya possible, but the auto has some work to be done before it’s better than the MT.

 

Stop giving Toyota ideas by speaking these words.

 

Look at the new Ranger. They come with only one drivetrain (turbo 4 motor and auto tranny) to help with production line efficiency and increase profits.

 

And, a chassis design that dates back to 2012. They'd be printing money if only they would sell some.

Nope. The Frontier outsold it last quarter. They were released for sale before January, so that can't be a factor.

 

I think Toyota has its hands tied with emissions requirements, which I have heard (but can’t confirm) is the reason for moving to the 3.5 over the 4.0 engine. If they are planning on a new generation, then what will they use? The 3.5 is a proven engine.

Also, a lot of work is being put in to 3rd gens towards improvements and such. I don’t know if they would be putting the work in if they were going to abandon them in a few years. Realistically, if they are planning a 4th gen it’s already been worked on heavily. New gens take years and years of development.

All subsequent generations do share some characteristics with precious generations, or else it would be a new vehicle entirely. While the design is similar... similar dimensions, similar parts... the 3rd gen is pretty different from a 2nd gen overall.

 

I agree, but I am also scratching my head as to why the 3.5l was calibrated so poorly. Not other applications seem to have had the problems that the Taco did. Beyond that, the TSB tune and OVT improved the problems greatly with better MPGs and a smoother motor. They need to hammer that out.

I think we will see the 3.5l in the Tundra, T4R, and 4th Gen Taco.

 

For those of you that don't have the Accumulator Delete Mod yet, hit me up via PM.

 

We can’t credit them for the OV tune work, other than giving them an idea of what we the consumer wanted. The TSB was their fix. The 3.5 was probably designed with the MPGs in mind so that’s why the calibration was lackluster. I can see it showing up in the next Tacoma and T4R, but I doubt it’ll be in the tundra. It’s too big

Also... with so many people on here worrying about mpgs, and we know they are on here too, it is hard to imagine them taking a different route for more power.

Hahaha! True. I just meant that a lot was left on the table for driveability and economy, esp compared to other Toyota uses of the 3.5. Driving it in a manner similar to the EPA test cycle, the stock tune was pretty bad, and my Taco was much better than a lot of folks who posted about theirs.

My guess is that it will be turboed in the Tundra, maybe even the T4R as a special edition.
