He doesn't need it likely. You can go A LOT of places without a locker. Hell I never had a locker for years. Pretty much don't still since Frank's been dead. Even then, I've barely used them.

ITs all in the line you pick and decent tires. Save his money. Just get out and drive.

maybe a winch is a better investment for him.

Yeah if he's not climbing rocks and shelves then a locker is probably overkill. Could always keep an eye out for a TRD rear end though, they usually go for considerably less than what an ARB + install goes for

yeah, but he would need to regear the front end as well if he went that route.

    Nah.

Just get him how and driving. He'll be fine. Once he develops some driving skill he can decide which will work better for his truck to suit his driving style/needs

ah yeah good point. Well, even still a used front diff and used TRD rear end will still probably be under what an ARB and install costs lol. But that'd be a fair amount of work.

Again...not really. Sure..some ledges and rocks no doubt. But, I have gone a lot of places with a lot of ledges and rocks with no lockers.

In fact, I wish all offroaders started driving without a locker first. Would teach them better line choice and how to read a good line. Then get a locker and you really know how to use it and when.

Guess it depends on the trail really. If I know it'll help in one spot vs making it more difficult then I'll use it because it's there. But different strokes for different folks, variety is the spice of life.

I think learning in my '86 pick up with open diffs definitely helped me figure out how to choose better lines.

Yea, that’s pretty much the only place I use mine to, but I’m in balls deep snow a lot, like 50+ times a year.

Engine bays look so much cleaner without abs and cruise control.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
ABS on an old Toyota with drum brakes is basically the devil. It does nothing useful. The ABS in my cruiser is surprisingly good, but I think the discs have something to do with that. I had ABS kick on in a second gen and made it damn near impossible for me to regain control.

Yeah I hate the feeling when that shit kicks in when you brake going over rough ground.

Even just a few bumps on the street will kick it on if you brake over them, I've learned which parts of my area to let my foot off the brake on when stopping lol

Mine hasn't worked since Toyota replaced my frame 4 years ago. They said it was like that when I dropped it off. It wasn't but I didn't care enough to argue about something so useless. It's getting pulled out soon.
