3N16 from Green Valley Rd is very washed out and rutted out big time in many sections right now, it used to be a lot more 2wd friendly. You should have no problem doing it downhill (starting from Green Valley Rd) but going up that way would be a challenge I think in 2wd, unless you're lifted/locked in the rear maybe. There were some pretty flexy ruts that had to be crossed going downhill through there. All it takes is one of your rear tires to lift off the ground in 2wd and you're going to be stuck.

3N16 from Big Pine Flats campground is still easy, as is all the other fire roads we encountered out that way including 3N14.

I do remember earlier this year though that 3N14 starting in Hesperia gets a little hairy in spots from all the rain this year. They even had it closed off for a few weeks due to a big wash out but it's been re-opened.

Yea I don't think he had a chance to record you racing through that obstacle, but I thought he had been recording video of previous obstacles.

@eon_blue is this the same trail we did with Danny and that group? I don't recognize but one portion of the trail but that was some time ago. Looks like you had a long day of work in some of those sections.

When was that? That must have been awhile ago, I don't think I've done White Mountain with Danny in a couple years but yeah this was most likely the one. Was that the trip where we had a bbq afterward? If so then I remember we didn't finish White Mountain that day, we took one of the fire roads out about 2/3 of the way through and cut it short.

The hardest mandatory part of White Mountain are the last two hill climbs at the very end, there are bypasses but even those are a little tricky. That was the section that we needed to do the most spotting on this trip, and busted out the traction pads for. The guys with lockers had no issue but the open diff guys needed the Maxtrax and a few rocks to help get over the big shelf on that hill

I just realized that you didn't go with us. The first time we wheeled together was Heart Attack.

When Johnston drove his truck off the last hill climb and we had to pull him up with the winch. Twas a good time.

White mtn trail still looks like a easy trail from what I remember , looks to still be mostly 2wd dirt road

It is the easiest 4x trail Big Bear has to offer from what I understand. Still not a 2wd trail though. Once you get towards the peak there are a few sections that really require 4x. Even open diff. The only way a 2wd would make it is with LOTS of skinny pedal and no regard for their vehicle.

yeah it's definitely not 2wd friendly when you get to the hill climbs, and there are several. But the stretches in between are 2wd friendly.

Last time on this trail was in the late 90's with my 68 M38A1 Jeep with front /rear Detroit lockers and geared super low at 128:1 low range

I know it's outta focus but this is the last hill on 3N17/White Mountain before you get to the end and take 3N16 out....no way you're getting up this in a 2wd, even if you gunned it you'd slam into so many rocks it would not end well lol.

    TW WHITE MOUNTAIN-29.jpg

The one right before this was the toughest one on White Mountain, aside from Suicide Hill which is completely optional. I didn't get any photos of it looking up but I think @bprout got some videos of the other guys on it.

yeah I'd say White Mountain is 4x4 required but no lockers needed...rear locker makes the whole trail easy but open diff 4x4s can still do it with one or two careful lines
