Shifter bushing replacement.

Thanks for letting me join. I searched here and think I may have found the solution to my problem. i ordered the parts to replace my 2003 shifter bushing as the best place to start looking why it will suddenly jump out of 4th gear. According to some videos all I have left to do is press down on the silver cup pictured and turn to the left to release it to get to the bushing. I've tried pushing down hard on each edge simultaneously with big screw drivers. Even hammered on the screw drivers a bit to no avail. It will barely budge downward. Maybe by 1/16 of an inch. I've sprayed PB Blaster around the circumference and still won't move any more. Not sure how, even if I can get it pressed down far enough I'm going to manage to turn it while it's down. Is there a special tool for this? Has anyone managed this by themselves? Just how far does this need to go down before it will turn? Sigh. Nothing's ever simple. Appreciate any suggestions.

 

When it’s dirty it’s a bit hard.

You push down maybe 1/2” or so. If it’s not going down then it’s frozen with dirt or something.

You can get a pair of pliers and wedge them from corner to corner and push down and turn at the same time, that’s what I did. After I cleaned it all out and replaced the parts it went it easily

 

Okay, thanks. I just watched another video and the person just presses with his fingers and easily turns it for removal. Guess you must be right, mines jammed with dirt or corrosion. I'll get back at it and see if I can work it further down. I didn't want to cause additional problems without some kind of confirmation.

 

Mine was stuck like yours, it took a bit of elbow grease to loosen it up and then had to use the pliers and pushed down with a ton of effort because mine was stuck too until I cleaned all the parts afterwards

 

I made this To push and turn. The ears fit down in to the cup opening. I managed by pounding on the other end with a hammer to get the cup this far down probably less than1/4 inch. While turning at the same time I could only get it move a little. I suspect neither is adequate. When I pull up on the shifter the cup simply pops back to its original position. I'm hitting it pretty hard and twisting as hard as I can. Frustrated

 

Put some Penetrating oil along the outside of that metal ring and let it sit for a while.
It locks in at the bottom when it is turned and u have to be able to push it down far enough 1st

 

Does it look like the cup is down far enough in the second picture? Or should I continue to hammer the heck out of it. It doesn't feel like it wants to go any further but...... I have saturated it with PB Blaster

 

There are two metal pins that lock on both sides

 

The pins have to go all the way up the side of that sleeve as shown and lock in

 

It look like you might be pushed down far enough, just try and twist it while it down

 

Thanks for the picture. I seems like the cup is down far enough to clear that nub. I'll let it sit overnight soaking. I'm twisting with all my strength

 

Yea, I think so, You’ll have to come up with some type of leverage to twist that sleeve going in the correct direction whatever that is while pushing down

Make sure you replace two items.
The ring seat and the plastic bottom cap

 

Finally got that thing out. It's full of gritty stuff, evidently the remains of the bushing. I did order both parts. I could not twist that thing. I had to put a large screwdriver on the end of the straight portion and tap several times with a hammer to get it to move. I certainly appreciate all your help. Cheers

 

Now's the Time to replace the rubber boot on the stick shift if you need it replaced

 

I'll check them closer tomorrow but they appear to be in good condition. Maybe due to the 73000 miles I've managed to put on my little 03 Taco truck.

 

What an amazing difference a $20.00 part makes. Very positive and solid shifting after replacement. Even letting the clutch out in first gear feels better with less gas needed to prevent jerking. Wow! Easy job assuming one can get the cup out that was so difficult on mine. I did notice a slight ridge at the top that was a slightly larger circumference than the rest of it. I filed it down a bit and it went in easily enough. Thanks 1997tacomav6 for all your advice and pictures

I just went to the dealer and got OEM parts and then I think you use some axle Grease for that little Center hub
