I also have a snugtop rebel with outsdoorman package, a prinsu on top of that, a truckvault that is fully loaded with gear and a dometic cfx95 in the bed for weight.

But I live and commute in the city of San Francisco. Hills everywhere

 

I'm planning to do one soon, actually have a busy who bought one from rough country, said it's the exact same thing just repackaged. Im curious what my true reading is.

Yep told me the same, and we did it on the 300+ mile drive home the next day, wife was hating me bc I didn't tell her that part.lol

that is crazy, I have 285 70 17 and a little bit of weight but not too much, and I'm averaging about 15-16 mpg,I will say the area I'm in is right in the middle of the mountains tho so I know that takes a toll.I don't often run past 70-75 it feels like it's wound to the max lol with it now running at a higher rpm. Im extremely curious to see what impact will happen when I put these 35x12.5x17 on soon and add all the planned weight. Camper shell, rear bumper with swing out, .front and shell roof racks and of course a ton of accessories and stuff to outfit it.I really hope it doesn't completely tank my mpg to a ridiculous point of being unenjoyable to drive.

yeah that's what I thought, must be nice lol.I am ready to do anything possible to gain mpg back at this point, I really need someone to help me understand and decide if an ovtune could help me with this and is worth the investment.

 

I am on 285/75/16 Mud terrains, with a Gofast camper, plywood platform built with all my camping gear in the rolling bins under. Full steel rear and front bumpers, steel sliders, aluminium skids. Im averaging 14-15 MPG now, and driving faster and more aggressive since the truck feels so much better! I was avg 12ish before the upgrade, but also I was driving like a grandma. Love the new 5.29's.

 

Granted I'm still running stock diff at 3.90, with 33's Pro Comp AT Sport tires, I'm doing ~86 mile round trips to work 98% Interstate driving with 65-70mph posted speed limits...and I'm averaging right around 19.8mpg (adjusted for 33's vs. stock). FYI, the Taco is not my daily driver, but recently my DD A/C died...so we shall see as temps rise as we approach summer here in coastal/Richmond, VA area.

 

Got mine installed! 1-4 gears go really fast, but RPMs stay low due to OD gears. I think this is definitely the way the diffs should be geared based on the auto transmission. Glad I went with the 5.29 over the 4.88. I'm on 33s for now.

My initial drive for the break in was not the best - lots of stop and go in traffic, but I got the truck back during rush hour so no real choice. Drove it for 12 miles/25 minutes then let it rest for 45 while shopping for groceries, then 4 more miles to the house. Hoping the REM polishing makes up for the stop and go.

FYI, buy 7 quarts of gear oil. I had originally bought 4 and the shop had to run out to get 3 more. Luckily there were exactly 3 left.

Like to throw my 2cents in. I have 2016 sport 4x had Icon lift cant give you a stage but i upgraded the rear to RXT omegas and bump stops front upgraded the s[prings to 700lb coils. I installed 4.88's as soon as they came available and then added OVtune . Recently added a Demello front bumper with a winch and a Pelfreybilt rear HC with a custom swing out. Prinsu rack, a bed rack with an RTT and i have a full set of steel Mobtown skids all running on 34" Cooper STT Maxx tires. So she is a heavy bitch! Recently went to New Mexico about a an 800 mile trip. I have to say the 4.88's dont work at all well for my setup. Back home with daily driving it has been fine even fun to drive. But the gear hunting ,loss of power on any incline was just stupid,having the trans downshift from 6th or 5th into 3rd gear is just ridiculous and i wasn't trying to go over 70 MPH ! So anyone with a rig setup something like mine may want to just go with 5.29's! I think i am going to be the guy who gets a second re gear to the 5.29's its really that bad with the 4.88's unless OVtune comes out with tire and gear tuning sooner then later!

 

Thanks for the input! I to am running a 34 currently 285/75/17 and mobtown sliders. Theres a youtube video of someone who did 488 and then he made a new video about his 529 and he likes them a lot. Nitro gear also just released a informative video. They did 5.29s on a stock 3rd gen!

 

If they were available back when i did my re gear i would have done the 5.29's then.

 

Almost did the 5.29, but saw 5.71 as an option for my 8” and goddamn, should have been the first mod I did.

Was expecting the Speedo to read fast, but it reads exact, 75 is 75mph per Waze GPS. Running 255/75r17 or 31s. Now for some 33s.

 

I believe your speedo is reading the wheel speed sensor, so only tire size will affect the reading. Since you are running 31, that's pretty stock so I wouldn't expect a change.

The gear ratio should not play a role in speedo calibration.

 

For those of you who did the work themselves. Is there a trick to get the rear third member out? I know it's not the axles. In a write up for a 2nd gen, it said its critical to engage the locker, It does't appear as if the 3rd gens have the same window to manually engage the locker. Is there a way to engage the locker manually?

Do I just need to keep jiggling?

Nope, no trick. As long as the axles are pulled out far enough the third should drop right out.

 

Where did you get the switch panel to add the extra switch for the front locker?

This past weekend Nitro Gear in Cashmere WA did a 5.29 install on my '19 TRDOR. I am very stoked with the performance with 33s, RTT, bumpers, winch, batteries, truck vault and mild lift. I had already done the 1.05 OV Tune in both 87 and 91 octane performance tunes without a copasetic solution. Highway speeds were limited to 4th gear in the 6 speed auto in the original configuration. When it was all said and done, 80mph was running @ 3000rpm iirc with the Hypertech calibration for 33s. Mileage wasn't really a consideration, but it appears that averaging 75-80mph had right about a +2mpg increase with less of an increase in the 60-70mph range.It has been mentioned that greater than 85mph becomes an issue, but after the 500 miles of break-in that included 5 thermal cycles, I ran it up to 97 mph in 6th gear. The original gears wouldn't hold 5th past about 75 and 6th was worthless with the weight, tires and wind resistance of this truck. I am very much satisfied with 5.29s with my weight and 33s as well as the hospitality dealing with Nitro in Cashmere WA.
