I think they likely used locked down bands in the VHF spectrum BUT if they aren't using a repeater and just relying on line of sight to their base station, that would explain why they didn't have connectivity.

There is a pretty great radio repeater network setup for HAM frequencies and you don't need a crazy high powered radio in your truck and can get away with knowledge and a decent handheld radio.

A few years ago, when a Jeep rolled on Black Bear (I know this happens all the time), it was the time the Sheriff threaten to close it for good. Someone with HAM had to do the rescue coordination because first responders couldn't broadcast out. I think they are all LSO and with Repeaters out there HAM has a better "reach" otherwise they are basically on similar frequencies.

When you realize you spent thirty minutes typing and deleting and staring and typing and researching and deleting and typing and staring and then just say fuck it, not worth it.

Came up with a no-weld solution for adding a cross member on my bed rack. Not sure if the O.D. tube clamp is heavy duty enough though. They're more meant for lights and small accessories.

I'd probably be comfortable carrying as many bikes as you could fit. Do bikes even weigh 10lbs any more?

I have an InReach Explorer+ and have used it a ton. The two way communication is great and I use the interval pings when I’m out scrambling solo on sketch terrain. Makes my wife a lot more comfortable when she can check the map and see I’m stil moving.

Wouldn’t be that hard to make. Buy all the stuff and an extra truck and let’s make one!
