I was just reading a thread about going off roading alone. That is exactly what I plan on doing. That is why I took the course. That is why I have been researching all the things that can go wrong and how to avoid or recover. One thing driving around Australia teaches you is self reliance and i have had several close calls, broken windscreens (they did not use safety glass), roo hits, push off roads by road trains, flat tires, etc. I have hit three deer riding my motorcycles.

The off road course teaches planning before going. Get out and look at the trap. Then ask yourself, do I want to proceed, make a plan, execute the plan, and evaluate the outcome for future reference. Always have a retreat plan, remember where there was a place to turn around. And practice.

So my question is...how often do you all go exploring on your own, and what have you learned?

Twice I've had to use the bat signal to get me out of really stuck spots. Both times i bought gear to get myself out the next time. I think its just making it through the learning curve and way over preparing

I go whenever its snowing, or if any chance arises I sneak in a little excursion.
But I tend to be more cautious while out alone.
I've learned how to use what resources are available at the time, instead of saying I wish I had _____. I focus on what I do have.
    Remember, improvise, adapt, and overcome.

I never go alone. My truck is over equipped both in capability and tools/recovery gear, but there’s just always the thought in the back of my mind “what if”.

I play alone a lot. I’ve learned that you have to commit. Being indecisive tends to have bad results for me.

I think it depends on the person.. I know one or two that will not go to the shitter with out someone.

    Back on topic.

People vary. I run alone all the time. I think by going solo (myself), I make (sometimes) better decisions as to what I’m doing and where I’m going. With groups of people. IMO, there is the automatic thought of... someone will get me out of a screwed up situation. So the natural warning light does not go off in the head. Could just be me though.

I look at this like, Life in general.. How much have you had to figure out on your own.?. Or do you constantly have someone there to tell you what to do and bail you out.

My $.02 anyway. And have also been told I’ve bumped my head WAY to many times, So don’t mind me.
