I used to own a 2014 Tacoma. Basically sold due to towing insufficiency. Have a 16ft sur-track tandem, 1800lbs, 2 quads 1200 lbs, some gear on trailer 300lbs (maybe). 2 adults and some stuff in the box, 500lbs. We had 2014 dclb with the towing package. It would tow it but man was it anemic. We drove the north shore of lake superior which isn't flat and the engine labored hard. We make this trip 3 times a year and decided to get a full size truck. Both my wife and I like the size and nimble handling of a midsize over full. We just wish Toyota would consider making an engine with more torque, diesel, twin turbo...whatever. just seems like the competition is moving forward on engine designs and Toyota is set in their ways. Every year we hear rumours they are going to put a diesel in...Is 2020 the year?

Seeing as 2020 vehicle production is going to ramp up in a few short months, no.... not very likely....or ever.

Look for a used Colorado w/5.3 (hen's tooth) if you wanna small truck with the balls of a big truck. My youngest has one, it's a freakin' beast. Has pulled his 24' loaded camper all over hell's creation (work). Never flinched once.

Ok, I hear you OP. I just disagree with your reasoning. The Torque and HP out of the 3.5L V6 is really in-line with a Tacoma-sized pickup. Almost everything you described, screams full-sized truck, which the Tacoma is not. The next point is, let’s see how “the other guys” power plants are holding up at 150k vs Toyota. If I wanted to place a small wager, I’d bet on the Toyota.

I would like to see Toyota do something with the Tundra to make it a better competitor for towing.

I'd be happy with the 4.6 V8. Remember when they put the small V8 in the 4runner

not going to happen at this point. 3.5L or smaller is all you're going
to see at this point. It's all about fuel economy & CAFE standards now.

I very much doubt it, Toyota has already expressed in interviews that development of new combustion engines is already slowing down to a crawl as they do not believe that it will be viable much longer. That was the reason given for why the GT86 and Supra were farmed out (joint development, whatever) instead of made in house.

Nope, not going to happen. The Taco is not a tow vehicle in most cases.

Hilux with 2.8 turbo diesel mated with automatic get 331 ftlbs of torque. We will never see. I like how the US gets blamed the most for climate change...yeah right, seems like the rest of the world can smog it up as much as they want

The problem is it's slower or as slow as the 2.7L gas engine and even the 3.5L Tacoma owners are clamoring for a supercharger or turbo option.

This is true as well, other parts of the world aren't as picky about acceleration times, noise, harshness as Americans are.

I think there will likely be a hybrid or all electric tacoma in our lifetime because thats the direction the market is heading, and thats about the only area in particular that Toyota isnt behind the curve on. An electric truck will have gobs of torque. It just wont be tomorrow.

Toyota is working on a high torque 3.5 twin turbo V6 for the Tundra. No numbers available yet.

However, a similar version of this TT 2GR in the Lexus LS500 lays down 442 lbs ft of torque at only 1600 rpm. So it's safe to say it will be north of that in the Tundra.

Will a version of it find it's way to the Tacoma? Who knows?

I'd like to the see the Tacoma go to a SMALLER engine and body. Like they used to be- light and inexpensive.
