Nailed it right on the head. Full size pickups are an American thing, everyone else gets plenty of work done with smaller trucks.

A truck is a tool first and foremost, the rest of the world doesn't care much if it's loud and slow as long as it gets the job done.

What's your elevation? The pass's we drive over are 11k+ which i think is the majority of the problems I had.

Most of the world around us primarily uses diesel. European countries have over 50% diesel cars, while the US is like 5%, if I'm not mistaking. I think the reason stems into two categories: 1) US emissions standards being different and 2) the additional cost of diesels.

    1) The US uses different standards to judge the emissions of diesel engines. Here, we look at pollutants that are more difficult and expensive to eliminate for manufacturers. Also, diesel was never really marketed in the US. Ever since the 60's, high power and luxury were the primary selling points of cars in the US. This required big gasoline engines. And it doesn't help that the US is one of the biggest producers of oil and gasoline.

    2) With that said, it also costs a little more for manufacturers to develop diesel engines. So at the at of the day, it's simply not profitable to sell diesels in the US when they're not marketed, the profit margins are smaller, and the government makes it as difficult as possible to import/produce diesels.

Fun fact: Diesels are over 30% more efficient. In fact, for us, the Prius is the pinnacle of fuel efficiency. Well, European diesels have been getting 50+ mpgs years ago the Prius became popular, and they arguably cost a lot less than a Prius. So really, the Prius is put to shame everywhere else.

The only way it happens is if all of the competitors roll out high torque motors in their small trucks.

The short answer is no. The trend is the other way. Who's clamoring for a midsize truck to pull more than 4000 lbs? That's what full-size trucks are for.

I pull a 2800-lb (dry weight) camper with no problems. Perfect for my situation, and much better to park and maneuver than the previous Avalanche we had.

I have posted before that I'm kind of a fan of diesel, but a) Americans don't want it and b) the acceleration would certainly suffer. (Though the BMW 540d is a case in point that a high-performance, high-HP vehicle is possible.) I've never driven a HiLux, but everything I've read says that the driving experience is way inferior to the Tacoma.

Agree--also diesel is taxed relatively more in the US than petrol, whereas the reverse is true in Europe, which is a big factor.

After seeing some guy in a full size truck pulling a trailer half the weight I was pulling lose control and run off the road because he was driving too fast with an incorrectly loaded trailer, the amount of power I have for towing is the least of my concerns.

Keep it out of overdrive, don't be in a rush, and just let it do its thing.

Yes. But...Ram trucks have become sort of a status symbol in Germany of all places. They even have these large gatherings to show off their shiniest trucks to each other.

    Exactly!

My hope is for a TT that will be in the 5k region, dry, since it would be the smallest one that would keep the family happy. I just need to figure out how that would handle our mountain passes. My plan is to hang out in the right lane, pretty much as I do now empty. No rush to get there, just enjoying the activity not the finish line.

The other thing that is constantly missed is that full size trucks 20yrs ago had as much power as we do and pulled heavier loads. This whole bit about climbing grades with acceleration to spare is just silly.

It always makes me laugh that folks from other countries scoff at the vehicles in the US. But then, almost all folks that I know who came here buy full size SUVs and trucks and never really use the capabilities.

I wouldnt be suprised to see it next gen. Same with the tundra it is due for a revamp in 2020 and although the rear suspension is all new I haven't heard anything regarding engine and drivetrain

Altitude is the one place I could see forced induction being really nice. NA engines instantly become frustrating gutless wonders up there.

Its definitely more about control than power. Although these days people always seem to be in a huge rush. Gotta save those 5 minutes I guess, that way we have more time to check facebook when we get there? I dunno.
