Neither. Only oil level monitoring is via the dipstick. Don’t be one, use one. :D

Sure, extremely low oil level will eventually get you a low oil pressure light and VVT cam timing fault codes with a check engine light, but there is no oil level warning.

Whatever you do don't check the dipstick. Your engine oil is like Schrodinger's Cat, the oil level is both full and empty until you check. If you check and the oil turns out to be low then it will begin doing damage to the engine.

Checking the dipstick takes maybe 10 seconds...do it while you're filling up with gas.

The CEL can come on if the oil is so low that it's causing low oil pressure, which will also trigger the oil lantern light. But by the time that happens you are most likely screwed.

Being "low" on oil like a 1/2 qt or 1 qt is not going to trigger the CEL or the oil lantern light, unless maybe you're on a steep hill. But all the same it is not good for the engine.

    You don't own a flashlight?

Don't have any illuminated parking lots around?

    Then use your headlights.

This really isn't hard stuff.

As long as it's at or near the top dot/full mark you're fine. Whenever you pull the dipstick, wipe it off then put it back in and pull it once more to get a more clear reading.

Try to do it on flat ground otherwise it might not be accurate.

What everyone best way to read a dipstick? Just to let everyone know. When I start it everyday you can smell oil burning for the first 5 min. Also there no oil spots on the ground where I park.

It happens to all of us.

One time I ate some questionable meat. Within twenty minutes I needed to evacuate my bowels, but where I was at the time made that impossible. While I raced home, I passed what I thought, hoped, was gas. The stress I felt at that moment is the same sort of stress you're feeling now. I understand, buddy. I got you.

The very first thing l would do is check the oil level !!! Hopefully it's just a low oil level and you haven't done any damage. That light is not one that you want to see light up.
It's always a possibility that the oil pressure sending unit is faulty. But l haven't heard of anyone complaining about that. But that doesn't mean it hasn't ever ocured.

l Check my oil all the time. Makes me feel better. But if you hava a known oil leak, I'd check it daily.

    Good luck

    Keep us posted :fingerscrossed:
