TL;DR version: 85 octane is fine.

Im lucky. There’s a shell half a mile from my house that sells 93 for $2.99 and I use my shell rewards card to drop it to $2.95. Most of the other shells around me sell 93 for $3.59.

I just drive onto the tarmac at and fill up with JP-8. Mileage sucks, but the acceleration, top-speed, and max-altitude are AMAZING!

If you do all your driving in reverse, it makes your truck front wheel drive, thus saving you fuel:evil:

I drive a Honda when I don't need my truck. Went from 18-20 mpg to 36-40mpg hwy. From 15 mpg to 25 mpg city.

The same tanker leaves the top tier stations and dumps the same gas in the tanks at the cut rate places. Only difference is the price they charge.

If your truck's owners manual calls for 91 or 93 octane, then buy it. If it calls for 87 octane buy that. Anything else is a waste of money and any gains in performance are between your ears.

In fact there is a good chance the tanker driver dumped 87 octane in the tank meant for 93 octane. It depends on how much he has left on the truck, how late in the day it is and if it is Friday or not. They only make 87 and 93 octane. To get 91 octane they mix 87 and 93 and it isn't scientifically measured, just eyeballed by the tanker driver.

Other than that keep speeds down, keep the tires properly inflated and keep in mind anytime your foot is on either of the 2 or 3 pedals on the floor it is costing you money. Drive like that and you'll save as much money as possible. But there is no free lunch, you gotta pay to play.

I'm getting 22-23 mpg using 87. I'm more worried about engine damage. Since 91 RON is listed in the manual, could 87 hurt the motor?

87 is all mine has had since pulled off the transport truck. Manual says 87, so there ya go.

I also do not "top off" the tank once the nozzle clicks off. I hear that's not good for the fuel pump.

I'll end up paying $40000 for the truck. I can afford to pay an extra few thousand for what the owner's manual says...Top Tier 87 octane.

I’ve done so many gas saving mods I have to remove gas from the tank each week.

There is more energy in a gallon of 87 octane than a gallon of 93.

    lol

+1 for seafoam. used it religiously in my previous 05 6mt as per proper instructions. As well as my old '96 subaru legacy (250k+ miles).

1oz per gallon every 3k miles.

A little anecdotal but it seems to have helped keep fuel injectors cleaner. I'd get regularly get 20ish mpg in my 05 ACLB, driving it like I stole it. Proudly in the 15-17 range for my '18 DCLB OR - but I don't even have 3.5k miles on it yet so not a good comparison..

Nope, (lets get this fire burning)

Octane is the measure of potential power and resistance to knock. If what you said was true the av gas would not be over 87, neither would methanol or race fuel.

    Let the octane arguments commence.......

Fires are always better with gas
