HPtuners is an amazing option... if you have access to someone who knows how to tune or have the know how yourself on how to properly use the software to build your own tune. Otherwise it’s just an expensive version of a canned tune, maybe a bit worse since there is nothing stopping someone from loading up a tune you find lying around that’ll blow your expensive gear to kingdom come if you don’t have a very similar setup.

Ahh, okay I didnt realize it was a gauge more than anything. Gotcha.

I never praised OVTune here. He knows his stuff no doubt, but his software is just not the one to use, as support is nonexistent for the 2nd gen boosted platform. He couldn't even email me back explaining how to do a datalog.

I have always been behind HPTuners. They have also been around since either the early 2000s or the 90s... they were mainly supporting the big 3, however, so they have been around forever, really. They retain the factory TRD Tune and allows you to make tweaks. I street tuned my car all remotely by email thanks to @JustDSM and while yes there is no major improvement to fuel economy after it has been all said and done, there has been an absolute dreamland of improvements which were easily obtained just by doing 10 to 20 minutes of datalogging on my (at the time) one off tune.

My point is, yes it is nothing revolutionary, but the reason why ththeththey are so revered in the muscle car community is because their support is unrivaled and their software just works. No frills, nothing.

Just my own take, as many others at this point feel the same way.

As soon as HPTuners can work in a fail safe like the UCon's Guardian feature, ill be on board to run that full-time. That feature alone is enough to make me keep running my UCon though.

I have used HP to delete the SAI so i still believe the MPVI2 is worth it's weight in gold.

I didn’t mean to infer that you were and OVtune fan boy, but their were a ton in here.

I’m familiar with hp tuners, I used one to get rid of the speed governor on my s10 way back in the day. I actually have a wholesale account with hp. What I’m not familiar with is their actual Tacoma product. I understand the basics, but short of self tuning I don’t really see where I would see much improvement over what I have now.

With that said most of my focus on my build is more around suspension and metal fabrication. I just messed with the motor so the truck wouldn’t feel like a slug compared to the full size truck, it’s just something to help separate me from my spare cash. If I was trying to ring all the horsepower from my motor I would of chose engine management that required a dyno tuner, but my goal is reliability and fun. I didn’t even want my redline to be any higher. The extra horsepower isn’t worth the money. I waste enough of that without blowing things up. I’m not really into racing people nor do I think you can build a Tacoma that you can call fast, without going the @Torspd route or swapping the motor.

It definitely sounds like the hp tuner is solid, but I’m not yet sold on where it beats the ucon, at least not on the older 2nd gens as they don’t seem to have the same issues that plague the newer trucks running the ucon. If something comes about that makes it seem like an upgrade from what I have for the goals I’m trying to reach them I could definitely see making a swap once it’s had more time on the market.

Yeah I know at some point I'll need to get a HPtuner to bypass that annoying and costly SAI failure. I'm hoping by then there are enough canned tunes floating around from reputable sources that something simple can be uploaded without much worry about grenading the engine.

Literally the only thing i changed was the sai delete. Everything else is still the same. Just have to disable a number of trouble codes

And adjust the max throttle angle in a couple tables for limp mode

I have the OVtune though and honestly I'm happy with it on my setup. From my understanding using the HPtuner would over ride the OVtune with stock settings even if I just want the SAI delete.

I see.. yeah that is my understanding of it as well. I didnt realize you were running OV. That does put a wrinkle in things if you want to keep it

@glorifiedwelder The biggest difference between the Ucon and Hptuner is you can share tunes and modify! Nobody has a clue what the Ucon tune is nor how to make it better cause only one person controls it. I never heard of any APR cam gears having premature wear? Just sayin

I thought two guys controlled it, but I also thought that if your tuner had the right software he could tune the ucon.

As far as the cam gears go, if I get some time I’ll look for the post. It was on here. This is the forum I come to that talks about Toyota engine mods. I know who was quoted in the post, but until I find it won’t attribute it to him, as it was someone of decent credentials.

From my understanding the OVtune guys might be willing to share their tune with people who already have their tune and an HPtuner. Might is the key word though. I'd rather wait for a bulletproof tune and, better yet, local support if my trusted shop begins to support HPtunes on Toyotas.

I was just doing a overall checkup on all my fluids and what not and I decided to swap my afe filter back on over the donaldson now that I have ran it for about 10,000 miles just to see how much of a power difference if any the butt dyno can pick up. I figured from here out ill run the donaldson only for offroad trips. I couldn’t believe how much sand was in it, probably half a pound or more. I cannot get it all out sadly, but I got a lot of the heavy stuff out. When I shake it I can still hear more in there. Everything is looking good under the hood, excited to get my cam gears for a good mod weekend. I finally found my snout cutter too which I will be needing.

Also I thought it would be interesting to share, only about 24,000 miles on the blower and my blower belt is already starting to crack on the ribs. Nothing huge just small cracks forming. A little bit of oil around the snout area but I think it’s nothing to worry about. When I have the charger off for injectors I think I will swap the oil out of it just for good measure.

I don’t know if you have the factory belt, but my factory belt lasted like 10k miles. After that I started running the gator backs or what is now the continental elite belts. They are soooo much better than stock it’s not even funny. Can easily last 60k miles if not more on a 2.875 or 3” pulley

My original lasted 25k ish. I just went with a normal Gates belt since I can buy 5-6 of those from NAPA for the price of getting a Continental Elite at Crappy Tire up here in Canada.

Gatorbacks are now obsolete as is the Continental Elite series, as they now switched to some OE style micro v rib style, which is too bad because Gatorbacks were good belts.

The OE belt is no good because it is made by Dayco, a brand I no longer am fond of because of their short lifespan. I would rather run Gates stuff now and will likely be switching to an RPM series here in short order.

Still on the original. It will be going bye bye soon, just waiting on cam gears to start the big mod day.

Also I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference, but with the clean afe filter my truck feels like new again. Not mad at the donaldson though, I didn’t have any residue in my intake track like with the afe filter last time.

I’ve purchased two of the continental elites in the last couple months. When did they Stop making those?

I’ve got a Gates Racing belt. Let’s see how long it lasts on my setup. Thankfully my belt is a 5 minute swap.
