I flashed the update on Wednesday. Put 100 miles on it since. I concur with other opinions in here. I didn't hate the the way it drove before so I didn't think I'd really notice. It was immediately obvious though, my truck drives much better. Even my passengers notice, admittedly they may have been humoring me.

My only complaint has been the stuttering in the 45-50mph range. While talking to a mechanic at my local dealership I mentioned it and showed him the old tsb 0058-18-r1 before they pulled our 4A7000 ecu code off of it. He was willing to plug it up and look and did find a different TSB that listed the new ecu 4A7100. He did not state what tsb he used but he did update the truck for me and it is noticeably smoother the last few days.

Will this work on a 2019? Carista is showing my engine calibration as 8966304B4100.

Don't believe so. The '19s should already have this since it came out before they started making them.

Ok well I picked a dealership that's in the list on the first page that has done the update for someone else, but still talking to the service manager about this he said "there has never been an update for a 2016 Tacoma" so of course I absolutely can't wait to prove him wrong. God why do most techs act like no one could possibly know something they don't? I'll stop whining now, just want to make sure I got my shit straight before I go into the dealership for my appointment tommorow, so please tell me if I'm wrong anywhere.
So I will talk to the tech that is going to be the one to physically work on my truck, not the lead tech or the manager, and I need to tell him to run Tech stream on my truck and run a health check and he will see that my truck is running engine ecu 04B1100 and that there is an option to update to 04B13, and to install it. Now the tech I talk to should understand that right, I'm not wrong? I'm not going to mention any tsb or such BS because there isn't one for our M/T truck's and that only seems to worsen the situation.
    Sound reasonable?? :quickdraw:

I got tired of getting the run- around and traded mine off. At my 20k service, the adviser told me that I had to go back to the dealer that worked on this problem first, I said no way, I'm done with Toyota. I'm driving a Cummins now.

Yes sounds reasonable. The challenge is getting to talk to the tech that will be doing the programming. If they do the healthcheck they should see the update.

Cool, well we will see how it goes then. As far as I'm concerned I'm not claiming tsb or warranty, I offered the pay for the techs time, so I don't see any harm in speaking to the tech directly, because he's the one who will have hands on my truck. Aslong as I'm polite I don't for see a problem.
Hey OP, they told me they would run a diagnostic check on my truck to look for an update, does that mean they will use Tech stream and perform a healthcheck? Only reason I ask this is because the lead tech corrected me and said health check?, well we call it diagnostic check. Sorry for all the questions, just want to be prepared. Thanks man for all the info!

Yes we refer to a diagnostic check as a healthcheck and it is performed using the Techstream. You shouldn't have pay anything for the update. The dealership bills Toyota corp so don't offer to pay anything.

I just had my 15k service done and had them confirm the update took last time. They claim yes. Still drives like shit a few months later. I don't think there's any fixing this outside of a tune.

I will see what they tell me, and if they say they applied the update, I will be checking with the carista to see if they did or not. I'd say buy a carista and check it out and see what your running .

Had this done today at my local dealership for '17 6MT. I asked for a printout as proof. Bingo: calibration 8966304B1300! Instant driving difference. Linear throttle, no surge, no mushy gas pedal, feels like more torque and my gas mileage average actually improved slightly on the drive home. I don't know what Toyota is thinking. I've had several Sienna SE vans and the driving experience got progressively worse from model year to model year on the same freaking van. I had them download a TSB similar to this Tacoma TSB on our '16 and it immediately felt as good as our 2011. WTF? Saving people from themselves with awful throttle response??? In my opinion that's more dangerous at intersections than a twitchy throttle. Anyway, fixed now.

I think lots of 6MT owners have been living with the engine mapping problem for a long time. Glad I got mine taken care of.

Just got the update. The truck feels much more responsive now. Engine braking no longer cuts off at 1500 rpm either. Heartland toyota bremerton, wa. They also ordered parts for transmission whine tsb.

Well a win relating to this thread and a loss for me personally. The dealership found the update and admitted it was there and agreed to apply it, but they absolutely refused to do it for free. So they wanted to charge me $170 for 1 hour labor to install said update, no matter what I said. I mean I am up to 120K miles and no warranty but I do not think I should have to pay for this update, that smells like B/S too me. So I will try another dealership and see if I can get them to do it for free or a reasonable price.
Thanks for everyone's input so far!

Sorry to hear that. But in general, TSBs are covered under the warranty period. Although if you look back in this thread, dealers were only billing 0.4hr for the work. In truth, it takes about 10min or less.

Yeah I feel you bud, I just know it doesn't take 1 hour to do this, and like you said there only billing for .4 for some, and if they would have given me a fair price I would have no problem, but I don't like getting screwed. So if the other dealers try the same thing then I might aswell put that $170 towards a tactrix cable that I will need anyways and do it myself. Just good to know that dealers are recognizing it.
