Will Toyota ever build a bigger torque engine?

Can't really comment on it yet, I have not really gotten into the throttle too hard yet... it only has 500 miles on it

I have to be honest, as far as I can tell, if you are doing things with your Tacoma where you legitimately need more power/torque....you probably shouldn't have bought a Tacoma.

I’m tempted to say that there is a lot of economic ignorance among some people here, but I won’t.

I don’t mind diesel or turbos. I’ve had vehicles with both, in fact had a Mercedes 3L turbodiesel in my RV that would carry a combined weight of 15,000 pounds AND get up to 18 mpg. (And took about 15 seconds to get to 60 mph...)

But look the fact is Toyo sells over half a million Tacomas built (and priced) the way they are. There is no incentive for them to change to diesel or a larger engine or add a turbo, except possibly downsizing to a 2-2.5 L engine with turbo like the Ranger. Or providing an electric assist (plug-in hybrid).

Let’s be honest: if they brought the HiLux here, what percentage of medium truck sales would it take away from the Tacoma? 5%? 10%?

If they increased horsepower and torque with a larger engine or a turbo, how many people would spend $5000 more for that option? (About $1000 per 10 extra HP is what it cost to go from the WRX to the STI for instance.) Not many I’d wager.

Toyota knows exactly what they're doing and it fits 95% of it's buyers. A lot of people want more room, more power or more something else. Toyota knows that's the 5%.

They had awful ride quality. Interiors were very utilitarian. They rolled ALOT in a corner (didnt stop the tour guide in Belize from doing 60mph down a gravel mountain road but hey). And meanwhile people on this very forum complain about manual seats and non-auto headlamps. Im hoping the OME lift will make my Taco ride a little better.

I can understand that. Im still very surprised how well mine handles though. I can take highway curves at 80+mph without feeling like its going to fall over. A set of sway bars would probably do it wonders on road but would limit off road travel.

When they go electric you'll have torque to spare...

We log alot of highway miles in Tacoma so I have to take into account both on and off road handling. Ive daily driven racecars with straight pipes and almost solid suspensions........maybe Im getting old but I like some comfort.

I wouldn't say the gas mileage is poor on the Ranger I drove 100 miles on back roads and 20 miles at 70MPG and I got 29 MPG. Easy 24 around town. Just have to lay off the turbo which in itself is hard as the truck flies.

I will look at Tacoma again when the next new design hits the streets. My 2016 was a dog compared to the Ford. Hoping the 2024 Tacoma is better on all metrics. I am not beholden to ANY brand. I buy the trucks with the latest tech and modern drivetrain at the time. I have never kept a vehicle past three to four years.

Id like to pull a boat out of the lake up a wet boat ramp in a Ranger for comparison. I worked for Ford when the Ranger was released and just wasnt impressed enough to take the new vehicle purchase hit again.

I think my OR is a happy medium. Especially with the mods I have done (minimal at the moment) and plan to do.

I don't blame you. I had four Tacomas, the 2016 was the worst of all of them on many metrics. I am not a "Ford guy" nor a Toyota guy. I buy the best truck for the moment. At this moment it's the Ranger. In three years maybe another Tacoma.
You would definitely notice the torque on its own and pulling a boat. Apples and oranges vs 3 rd gen Tacoma. A Rear locker is good enough for pulling boats out if needed.

With Toyota selling 78,000 trucks a quarter, I fear they won't be hurrying to redesign the truck. People are buying them "As is" because of reliability (not as good 2016) and resale which is 67% after three years whereas the Ranger is leased at 62% after three years, (That's pretty generous for a Domestic which will have huge incentives at some point))

Brand new mine needed leaf springs, the OEM ones suck. Lol. Thats why its getting Dakars. But my Camaro engine needs to go to the machine shop first.

My 16 has been flawless aside from the ac blower motor crapping out at 4200 miles. And I sold Ford parts for 9 years so we wont get into a parts failure rate discussion. lol.

Mine was fixed pre-recall, then they did the recall fix a few months ago anyways.

All I need it to do is last three or four years. I put 500 miles a month on my side of the garage. So I won't have a ton of miles when I turn it in or trade it..

Ive beaten on my third gen quite a bit, only real flaw ive noticed was the weak leafs and im sure they did that to give it a better on road ride quality since most people use these trucks like mini vans.

In the rest of the world the hilux gets used for the work that 3/4 ton trucks get used for here. But to the American market they're relatively small and underpowered. Toyota would be nuts to put the hilux in the midsize segment here, it'd get slaughtered because most of the people just want to pickup flowers at home depot. And for the people using them for real work, it would be up against the big 3 full-size trucks, where it would also get slaughtered. The market here is just all wrong for the hilux.

Ive towed multiple cars (it will also be the tow rig for my Camaro), I tow my 20 foot ski boat, Ive used it to drag dead cars around our service lot, ive recovered multiple vehicles, and I off road it at the local OHV park. I dont abuse it per say but I def dont baby it.
