So not knowing much about Tacomas when i bought mine is hurting me. I didn't know that the 4cyl tacos didn't have the diff locker in the back. So now I'm really craving that locker. I can't really afford an after market locker. Would it be a bad idea to just pull a locker from a wrecked taco at a junk yard? or would that cause some problems being its a 4 cyl? I'm not very mechanically inclined, so this may seem like a dumb question. Also if it is possible could anyone help me out on how I could install it?

    It can be done.

It could be a pain though.

Gears need to be the same - It could be re-geared but that could cost approx $200 for gear and $200 for master install kit plus $200-300 for labor.

Also it has to wired up for it to work.

The money savings could be huge if you did it yourself. If you had to pay someone it could only save a few hundred bucks. It all depends.

I just saved for an ARB Air Locker because the time and frustration outweighed all the hassles - If I could do the labor myself it would be different.

so aside from the labor I guess there's no way to get all of it from a junk yard?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You need the whole axle, not just the 3rd. FWIW, they had 4cyl lockers in the 98-00 years.

4.56's came stock in my "02" TRD/dc 4 banger. Surprised me.
Not sur if having a locker in the rear is gonna help much in the winter, might even be worse than an open diff. If you live in an area where you get alot of snow and ice I would maybe opt for a selectable locker or an LSD.

this is true open diff is better on ice less likely to kick if only one tire spins instead of both like a lock will make happen

ok one more question. I hear the lunchbox style lockers make your rig jump and click and pop and crap when driving. Does it make that much difference on road? or will it keep the road quality ride I'm use to? I just don't want to go buy it and then hate it when I'm driving around on road.

Supposedly Powertrax fixed those issues with the No-Slip. The Lock-Rite was the one that ratcheted and popped.

Apparently the 2011's come with an LSD, or it's at least an option since my 2.7 has one...works well too I found some dirt the other day...2 nice long treadmarks :)

I think you've got the electronic braking type of LS. Instead of a mechanical unit in the rear diff, it's computer controlled braking on the rear axle. Same basic effect as far as I know.

Not totally sure, window sticker says electronic lsd, and it's definitely not an open diff, but Odontoceti know enough about how it works to be sure. Also have traction control, but that could be on all tacos for all I know
