Right. Check the DOT and google how to read a DOT before you go.

And remember that the age of a tire is just as important as its tread.

Dear lord... would you drive on them? Is there something horrible about dismounting and remounting them? :bananadead:

I'd probably buy them if the price is right for whatever the tread wear is, replace my spare with one, and go buy a new pair to put on the front. But I've also had something janky for a spare for years, to where lots of things would be an upgrade. One of the last size I had, one with more plugs than I care for, random one the right size but real old, etc...

He’s not talking about spares, but all tires. Can’t beat new, and if you can afford it, than why not.

I personally prefer buying new tires. But I've bought used before. I just Check the specific tire's online reiews, to see what owners say about them. l check the 4 digit manufacuring date to see how long l can use them if they check out visually ie. what tread remains, cracks, any flat spots etc. Plus the price has to be worth buy second hand. But sometimes buying used is your only affordable choice.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes

So it should come as 14/32 when I check the tires out?

Used tires aren't that bad, I sometimes buy take offs that are "like new" and have never had a problem. Just look out for plugs and patches. Make sure the tires aren't dry rotted. And as everyone else has mentioned check the date they were made. If you do end up buying a single new tire, I recommend getting it shaved to the tread depth of other tires.

Meaning he's had them that long, right?

They could have easily been 2 yrs old when he got them.

Nor was I particularly talking about spares, aside from if you give me 3 tires with non-negligible wear, I'm using a pair and making the 3rd my spare.

I was just pointing out the idiocy of a blanket statement to never buy used tires... your own tires are used the moment you drive out of the shop. They age, but they have DOT stamps showing it, they wear, but you can measure that, they can be damaged, but excepting internal ply damage you can see it. And they're often priced attractively compared to how used up they are...

I usually buy mine new too, but it's a less worse place to pinch pennies than many others.

I agree with what your saying, but it didn’t feel like a blanket statement. it’s valid to only want to buy new tires, unless your really struggling for money. It may be more expensive, but it’s much easier to deal with. No worries or hassles, you just go to the store and do it. If money’s not a problem, than why would you bother with used ones.
