Has that happened in WA before? I don't know what's normal for up there but it would be a shame to see so much of that greenery that makes the PNW so beautiful disappear.

 

Yeah it's typical actually, the center dries out, the western side is in zero danger of drying out. Eastern gets dry too but usually not too bad

 

Stopping for lunch before finishing the leafs was a bad idea. Just gotta put the shocks back and torque stuff down, but man I lost all motivation.

Actually, we will *never* truly undo the harm the drought has caused. And actually, *we* caused the harm, not the drought...

I did a little calculation a while ago and found that in 2010, CA used enough water to drain Shasta (the largest reservoir) every ~43 days.

The groundwater aquifers are actually a major water storage system as well, and that whole ground sinking thing I tend to ramble on about actually causes a permanent reduction in the volume of water an aquifer can store.

When the ground is made up of clay minerals (they are flat "plate" shaped when viewed under a microscope), the spaces in between those "plates" are where the water it stored (like a bunch of dirty dishes tossed randomly in a sink). When that part of the aquifer is pumped dry, those clay minerals lay flat, leaving less space between the plates to store water. So even if you (try to) pump more water back in that you took out, you'll never be able to store as much water as was once there.
