To high clearance, or not to high clearance.. rear bumper question.

Yea, I see what you're saying. Just a big "U" shape with steel on the outside for protection, the bedside nested in the middle and frame mounting on the inside. It would be really large considering the Tacoma bedside is must larger than the LC body panel (and hangs a lot lower).

 

That's a lot stubbier than the bedside of the Taco. A lot less overhang from the bumper and less concern for needing more support.

 

I would have to agree that the top of the sides is the weakest part.

idk, I guess the benefit of not cutting your quarter panel is resale? but if you need a HC bumper then you plan on wheeling pretty hard and I think anyone would notice the squeaky af springs and Frame/axle scratched to hell. By then id imagine resale would suffer, HC bumper or not.

 

Exactly, I feel like it would be a good option for those who are on the fence about cutting their bumpers. Even if it stuck out a little bit from the body lines, would still be a much more feasable option for a lot of people instead of cutting their trucks bodies up.

 

IMO though those people would just be better suited getting a bolt on standard one. Like I mentioned earlier I have a friend with a non HC and wheels it pretty good, and hasn't hit his bedside yet. Then you don't have all the added weight of a non cutting "high clearance"

 

Some people arent looking for more clearance... just dont want to bash in their rear quarter panels. Even these shitty Trail gear bumpers have served me well. Here is my old 4runner, this trail gear bumper took a beating but never damaged my body panels. and these are like the bottom of the barrel bumpers, Chinese made and not very much protection, just there where it counts, under the body panel behind the tire to take the trucks weight when it popps off of a ledge or a rock.

 

Right, what I'm saying is it's harder to bash your quarter panels than people realize.

All HC bumpers do, it's necessary for those long wings. That was the discussion earlier, was trying to support the wings without cutting through the bed.

On tacomas though? Different trucks behave differently. It also depends on type of terrain being wheeled. I can just speak to what I've personally seen.

I wheel slow dusty rock trails, If its anything like minitrucks, it will see damage there.

Yeah so this thread is about 3rd gens. It does look like 2nd gens get more clearance, and im obviously comparing a HC 3rd gen bumper to a non HC plate bumper, not the factory garbage and assuming tow hitch removed. I thought all this was fairly clear, but apparently not.

For reference, im specifically saying my RCI rear with hidden receiver and tow package receiver taken off looks like it will have identical departure angle to any HC rear ive seen in this thread.

 

Helix66, this is exactly my issue. No swing outs and I'd have my full size spare under (which, to many, defeats a lot of purpose in HC). Because I transport dirt bikes a lot of more times than I wheel.

Let me know what you end up getting, I'll copy your setup. Heck let's drive to fresno and pick up some bumpers this summer

Will do....it's a ways off but want to do the home work now and also if the suspension would need to be upgraded to hold the extra weight (200 lbs).

That's the main reason I bought the taco, to carry my dirt bike. I used to wheel a lot then got a bike and almost never do but would like to possibly get into it again.....and to get to tough staging spots.

You can mount the spare in the bed. I'm not planning on any lift or big tires yet...probably just the 255/85/16s.
