3 inch lift with Fox 2.5 adjustable remote reservoirs on all 4 corners. 33 inch Toyo MT’s. New upper control arms. Fab 4 low profile rear bumper. OV Tuner. LED cab lights. Sound deadening “Kilomat” TRD Cold Air Intake with Throttle body spacer.
I am going to look at re-gearing my 3rd Gen Tacoma. I have read a few threads and only found a few YouTube videos.
I am stuck on 4.88 vs 5.29 nitro gears.
Has any one tried both and can offer a little feedback.

If you’re paying that much, go for the 5.29. May actually get some use out of 6th gear.

Is it true that top speed with 5.29 is under 100mph? Not that I drive 100 mph very often but I do open it up on road trips.

You have no excuse to be doing 100mph on any public roads.

Theoretically, you could still go 150 mph and still be under 4500 rpm's if you're running a 34.5" tire... Theoretically.

It all depends on your tire size and how you use your truck. What size are you going to?

33’s or less (lighter 33’s not 10-ply) with not a huge amount of weight 4.88’s. Anything above go 5.29’s

You would need to recalibrate your shift points with Hypertech or OVtune. The 4.88 tune from OVtune is not out just yet

There are 4.56:1 gears available too from Toyota. @Jeff Lange can get this part numbers for you. If you are looking for a happy medium.

I’m thinking of 4.88’s and using 265’s for a little while with OVtune and seeing how I like it. I don’t see myself going bigger than 33’s.

Are you speaking from experience like he asked or are you simply regurgitating things you’ve read on TW and passing it off as advice? Which gears are you currently running?

I'm loving my 4.88 with 58 lb 33-inch skinnies. I don't have a ton of weight but if I had a heavy truck or wider and taller tires, I would do 5.29. Truck is so much happier now. This is at 6K elevation and running the OV tune. Truck actually uses 5th and 6th now probably more in the last 3 weeks than it has in the last 2 years.

Sweet I am using 33’s M/T’s when off roading in the Mountains of Colorado. And swapping back to 31 with open country A/T’s for daily driving.

My home town has a lot of BLM land and open country roads were a group of us used to race. I intend to enter in some entry level Baja races under 200 miles and would want to make sure I could reach 100mph without struggle.

I do have the OV Tune which is bad ass and help dramatically.

Thanks for the web sites I will continue to do research.

4.88 should be enough for you then.

I have a ton of armor, plate bumper + winch, 33" STs, RTT, DCLB and 4.88 is just right...with OVTune.

5.29s for your intended use is way too much but some people like to compensate, so thats up to you.

I’m going off what the guys at Nitro said when I called them and asked scenario based questions with various tire sizing...which is why I went with 4.88’s.

    ...You’re a grumpy guy aren’t you?
