Will Toyota ever build a bigger torque engine?

I generally have no idea how much electricity you need or would generate, but understand there is conversion loss. Line the roof of the trailer with solar to help. I don't know.

Anyway, I do find it slightly annoying when EV and hybrid are generally being pushed toward consumers who generally are losing money on transportation as opposed to making money. I'm basically using my truck 3% of my day. It makes me no money at all and is not a tax write off.

It seems like the high costs of theses technologies would be offset by efficiency gains for companies that utilize vehicles for work and making money. Basically anything industrial. Buses, ships, baggage carriers, postal trucks, all kinds of stuff that are actually used by companies to make money. Seems like they have a better chance of affording it and it paying off in the long run. Maybe there is more of this going on that I know or maybe EV/hybrid tech does not lend itself well to industrial uses.

In my head I wonder about people. Are there guys hanging out in a lot somewhere, talking about their trucks? Sizing each other up?

If Toyota had made a 350 hp Tacoma with a V8, would there be an owner of that truck sitting in a dirt lot with a bunch of dudes, bragging about his 1/4 mile times?

And what exactly happens when someone else pulls into that lot with a more powerful truck? Say, a 400 hp truck?

Does that person log onto a website and complain about how Toyota dropped the ball by not making a 450 hp truck? How do these owners react when they find out someone has more hp?

These are men who require hugs and affirmation.

You're cherry-picking the examples which suit your narrative.

Motor sports, by and large, is still dominated by internal combustion or hybrid powered vehicles. Yes, an EV set the new record at Pike's Peak, but that's also an 8 minute event. Formula One, Word Endurance Racing, Rally, NASCAR, Indy, they all still predominantly rely upon ICE or hybrid powerplants because EV's, while they have amazing torque, don't have the endurance to carry on for more than 1 hour of continual racing.

Volvo says they going EV...well guess what? They're still producing updated gasoline, diesels and hybrids like hotcakes. Why? Because people are still buying them.

People want vehicles that: A) offer convenience and B) are affordable. Right now, EV's have severe limitations in both categories. You say the public consumer wants EV's, but the sales trends would argue otherwise, and that's even taking into account all the government incentives that are currently backing EV OEM's and purchasers.

There are still plenty of hurdles to overcome before EV's truly supplant internal combustion. Also, the transition to EV's will simply be a case of 'Robbing Peter to pay Paul' unless we can figure out how to unf$%k our national power grid. Renewable power sources make up a very tiny percentage of our overall power supply...that's not going to change anytime soon.

One day, the world may very well run on EV's or some sort of fuel cell...but we're a long ways off from that utopia.

Smog will likely continue to exist in many areas where it currently is...the newest cars (both gasoline and diesel) are exponentially cleaner than they were only 10 years ago. While internal combustion engines are still a contributing factor to smog and air pollution, there are a lot of other man-made activities that contribute even more.

what contributes to smog in the Silicon Valley other than vehicles?

There are very few Manufacturing facilities left. There are no large scale farms. There are no power plants that burn coal.

Many off road mining and dump trucks are powered this way. However, it is done more for torque reasons than fuel savings. At the end of the day, power is power. It takes X amount of power to move our vehicles at 70 mph down the highway. The variables are the source of power (electricity, gasoline, etc) and the efficiency of how that power is transmitted. Electric is very efficient means of power generation but if you have to add a diesel as a generator for electricity then you actually add inefficiency.

I have been on EV and Alternative Energy Teams for the past 25 years. I am currently on two teams from major off highway equipment manufacturers. Harvesting wheat and grading dirt autonomously is one thing... turning millions of vehicles loose at 70 mph in all weather and all environments is something else entirely.
He is not grasping. Two things need to happen... better battery storage tech first, then when the world realizes just how little rare earth materials we actually have there needs to be a different power source than batteries. I am 56. I doubt I see full national acceptance and autonomy in my natural lifetime. I could be wrong but I doubt it, for reasons posted in this thread.

    Ships. Fires.
You do know that 15 large cargo ships put out more air pollution than ALL cars put together right? The reason is different fuels but there are over 100K of these ships.
California has unique weather patterns and that is why you guys have pollution.
Vehicles are very clean compared to pretty much everything else, which is why you pay $$$$ for them.

EV are cool, I’m not against them. But the math isn’t there yet...at least, I can’t see it. And if it does come together, EV and autonomous will be after my kingdom has fallen.

I just like torque and speed, if EV transportation ends up helping any other facet of civilization I'm cool with that as well.

Having an EV Caterham or Stalker with around 300ft-lbs torque for autox or track days would be dreamy.

Can I get the reference for '15 cargo ships put out more pollution than ALL cars?'. Not that I don't believe you - I would like to read the article - and if it's legit - reference it.

    Cheers,

There are several more but they are tech based and you have to do math. Basically they are reports that the daily mail article neatly summarized. I don't post bullshit lol.
