OME Dakar Leaf springs: Height and Rear shocks

you can take out the second overload from the bottom... Thats what I did. Helped brake them in..

 

You did that just to get them to settle? Or is that how you've been driving them each and every day?

Would love a pic if you don't mind.

 

Looks like yours dropped a good half inch!

Went out and did some flexing after work -

 

Yeah the rear dropped a decent amount, the front still sits super high lol
I see you figured out the dakars like to flex as well lol

 

I was surprised at how much they flexed!

Really I could've gone even more before the tire lifted up, but I saw how close I was getting to the bump stop. Seeing how much travel I have left told me I need to get spacers for them...

 

I forgot to get a picture of the leaf spring on the driver side but i think i was about an inch from the bump

Why didn't you extend your bump stops if you don't mind me asking? I'm not familiar with the OME Nitrochargers (if that's what you have) but I'd be afraid of bottoming out the shocks.

 

Combination of broke and lazy, I have an extended rear brake line sitting in my garage i have yet to put on lol

 

Speaking of lazy...my extended brake line just sits in the rear pocket behind my seat

I took forever to put mine on too, until one day when flexed out on a trail I was taking pics and noticed my stock rear brake line was pulled tight, any more and it was on the verge of breaking...freaked me out

It's super easy to do, the front ones are a bitch though...those stupid c-shaped clamps or brackets that have to slide off are a nightmare. Easy to reach on the rear though.

 

I couldn't figure out how to remove mine without stripping the bolt (the end closer to the bed, not at the axle end).



Someone posted removing the entire bracket that sits atop, but I haven't bothered since it's been raining like crazy.

 

You using a flare wrench? I think it's the only way to get that nut off

Tried doing it on a friend's 2nd gen Tacoma a while ago and couldn't get it loose no matter what we tried, so they can get stuck on there pretty good...might have to soak it in PB blaster.

 

Throw a few bags of concrete back there she'll be level

Flare nut wrenches are the only way to go. I should have bought a set when I turned 18, would have saved me a lot of frustration on some earlier Honda repairs.

I had to take the bracket off the frame to remove the clip, but based on that picture you have pretty good access to it. Grip the bent tip with a pair of needle nose pliers and a give it a good wiggle back and forth, once you get it moving it should slide up and out.

 

Those dakars I'm fairly certain are when you're carrying 500 lbs of overland cargo, I wouldn't plan on them settling. I vote remove one of those leafs - can't imagine what it's doing to the driveline :/

Also if you throw a lot of weight in the back as others have said you're brakes are gonna burn up like crazy. No reason why anyone would dio this to their daily driver

 

Dakars aren't meant for carrying heavy loads, they will settle into the 2.5" - 3" of lift that they're designed for without weight...if you put 500lbs on them then in no time they will ride on the bump stops and sag really badly, I went through that experience with them for several months before switching to a heavy duty leaf pack

You can convert them into a heavy duty pack by adding leaves to them though, OME sells AALs for these

 

Ryan, when you had the Dakars did you happen to do any light duty towing? I occasionally will pull a small boat and trailer 1500lbs (+/-) or occasionally have my dirtbike and some gear in the bed (250-300lbs) - I may have to add the D43XL AAL in Dakar pack, however I am worried that it will be really high in the rear unladen.

 

Just placed an order for Bilstein 5100 rear shocks; just need to test my theory of the Fox shocks being too stiff of a shock.
