I think flatlanders need to take a mandatory class on visiting the mountains.
How many of you guys have to get stuck in deep snow to understand? Do you guys read other threads here?

Ahh. You must be one of those who has never ever been stuck or never made a mistake. Pretty impressive, or boring, for someone retired.

Nobody picks when and where they will get stuck. If you've never been stuck, you just haven't offroaded all that much, or really pushed your vehicle offroad.

Glad you got it out last night. I woke up to this another inch or two of fresh snow in South Shore this morning.

Rule #1 never go off road by yourself always have another trail capable vehicle with you as in this instance could have easily pulled you out !!!!!

Also every 4x4 vehicle should have .....

Quality made 8k lbs rated winch and a smaller rated winch mounted on the rear

    Snatch block

    Multiple clevis fasteners

    (2) 50ft snatch straps

    Tree saver strap

    Endless loop strap

    Pull pal self recovery tool

Most of these single vehicle stuck in the snow scenarios could have easily self recovered themselves by winching themselves out . Using a tree , boulder , pull pal or a buried spare tire

I've learned from school of hard knocks. Only walked home once when my loaded truck got high centered in mud, which when unloaded, I easily drove over.

I agree with the list of recovery tools, and I agree that most of the time you should always try and not go alone...but I do think that wheeling alone is fine so long as you are prepared for the risks it involves. And a lot of the time people aren't, they go wheeling alone (or in groups even) without any tools, no recovery gear, no extra food/water, wearing flip flops and shorts and then freak out when they blow a tire or something.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to lend my tools out on the trail, which I am always more than happy to do but I really don't understand what makes someone think its OK to drive a vehicle somewhere remote without proper tools/gear.

(not saying that's what the OP in this thread did, just speaking generally)

I like your message. But I have to say that Rule#1 blows. I would be home on the couch most summer weekends if I followed that advice.

The 4x4 clubs I used to belong to in Socal along with being a CA4WDC member frowned upon going off road by yourself !!!

Nothing wrong with going solo if you are prepared for it (unless you are an overlander, cause who else is going to take pictures and drone shots while you are driving).

Inreach, PLB, plenty of options for those who enjoy being away from people. It’s thereputic to some.

    Jeezus, so many judgey blowhards.

Be aware of your limitations, your vehicle's limitations, your equipment's limitations, and look before you leap. If you are going to make a tough leap, have a buddy or a plan. And sometimes you won't get it right.

So what, dude took a chance and got stuck. I'm sure he's learned a lot more than what he would have by staying on the couch and reading the latest thread on TW. Are we cattle that cant do anything unless we are in eyesight of the other cattle?

    Life experience.
