Washed my truck today, noticed some water spots on the chrome exhaust tip so I went to polish it, used hot soapy water and sponge and microfiber cloth and now it looks like :annoyed:. Worse than had if I left it for sure...

    Wont come clean either...

    Any thoughts, am I screwed?

Wow. Is that residue or did the chrome actually come off?

Remove chrome tip. Place on shelf in garage. Leave it there.

I saw the title of this post and was expecting something along the lines of starting the engine without oil and driving off, not getting water spots on an exhaust tip:rofl:

If your fuckup can be fixed by replacing a sub-$50 part it's not a fuckup just a cheap lesson!

Fine steel wool and a can of coke? Or try some chrome polish.

Was absolutely expecting another "I drained my transmission instead of my oil pan and then put transmission fluid in my radiator because it was red" post, but luckily it seems we've avoided that this go round.

Personally I would try a very fine pad of scotch-bright. It’s normally used to clean copper pipe but it’s useful for other things

Its hard to tell from the pic OP. I’d remove it and take some metal polish to it to clean it up. That is, if it’s not the chrome that’s damaged and flaking. If that’s the case, I’d cut my losses and just remove it

Maybe try a water spot remover and some 0000 steel wool?

Not really an f up and not your fault. If an exterior part can't tolerate soap and water than something is wrong with it. I would just leave it alone.

I don't think its flaking, I rub my finger over it and cant really feel any missing metal.. it is a genuine Toyota exhaust tip, would be really disappointing if it was that easy to chip...

I did an axle dump, so I don't need mine. But, I did scotch brite it for a brushed finish instead of shiny chrome. Yours if you want it.

Wet sand with a very very fine sandpaper and then hit with some metal polish. I’ve had good luck with this on old bicycle wheels and center caps. A ball of tinfoil and water or coke also works good for removing little rust pits.

this should clean it right up, as long as it's not flaked off
