I can't even imagine how utterly useless reverse would be if you did this lol!

My take on this (keeping the 4.30 axles):

    1. Make 6th just a touch higher to bring down the rpms on the highway (also makes 5th more useful);
    2. Change 2nd gear to be a touch closer to 1st; and
    3. MAKE REVERSE LOWER. LIKE, LOWER THAN 1st!!!

Oh and lower 4lo Tcase ratio as well.

    There you have it.

Makes me wonder sometimes.. who was making the decisions with the gearing of the M/T and why.
I'd love to see the "rationale" behind it.

You can downshift into 1st if you double clutch, that's what I have to do on my 2.7 L with 5 speed. And reverse is lower than first.

I am coming to believe that the Reverse issue is a packaging thing. I believe that I read that the case casting is common among other MT or something like that. Standard interfaces are a common thing these days, esp on low volume parts. To make reverse lower, a larger diameter gear would have been need, which might not have fit in the case? Probably the same with going lower on 1st and higher on 6th? Just guesses.

Although, I think @RedBeard1 posted about a non-US gearbox with the ratios that we want.

Its interesting to see the gear ratio differences between the 2018 toyota 6mt and the 6mt in my 2007 nissan frontier. The toyota sacrifices closer gear ratios in order to have a second overdrive. Hmm.

    Nissan - 3.55 rear end , stock 265/70R16 tires.
    1st: 4.368
    2nd: 2.518
    3rd: 1.743
    4th: 1.283
    5th: 1.000
    6th: 0.769
    Reverse: 3.966

    Toyota - 4.30 rear end - ? tires
    1st: 3.98
    2nd: 2.02
    3rd: 1.32
    4th: 1.00
    5th: 0.85
    6th: 0.71
    Reverse: 3.39

It is interesting that the 3rd Gen 2.7l MT had the 3.909 diff ratios though. What is yours?

IMO, the 3rd gen M/T V6 has two things baked in that make 1st gear downshift harder (not impossible).
    1. Throttle lag;
    2. Accumulator delay.

I'm not saying it can't be done smoothly stock, but it's MUCH easier now that I'm tuned and the accumulator is in the dumpster.
I will say that later versions of the OEM M/T calibration were better.

Good info, but with the Nissan diff gearing, the Taco has a lower 1st and 6th. I'll take the Taco ratios, esp give my MPGs, except for that enviable reverse gear.

I could only smoothly drop it into 1st while rolling only after the TSB tune and the ADM.

Yeah, I guess it depends on how you're using it. I've towed pretty much up to the weight limit of the truck and had no complaints about 1st gear being too tall. But if I were offroading it, then it would be a different story. Without a trailer though, its a highway monster, I love that.

My taco has the 2.7 with the MT, 4.30 gears and adorable little tires and its entirely too low for long distance highway cruising, but around town its a blast. Next set of tires is going to be 10% bigger, I think.

It is nice to have a choice.

I am debating the next sidewall size myself.

Go my route...got some 16 OR rims, more sidewall with them. Same size overal diameter rubber. The ride is noticeably smoother than the 17 sport rim stock tire setup

I have been half-heartedly looking for either Sport or OR wheels. I like the feel on and off road, but just trying to decide if I really want a taller tire overall.

Also, blacking out a spare set would be an easier route, which is the real goal.

    Me too!

So........ my son moved into a rental house with a unbelievably steep driveway.
When it was time to leave started backing up the driveway, perfect launch.
Halfway up notice a car coming, had to stop. Second launch was less than stellar.
Was like WTF is that smell.... this place stinks.....
Realized it was clutch. Felt like a absolute fucking rookie.

    Reverse gearing sucks for sure!
But this stock clutch has zero feel unless that is all your focused on. My biggest gripe with this truck.

ADM and free play adjustment helps.
I can’t wait to throw it in the trash.
And that may be sooner then I thought, have a slight chatter now starting in first sometimes.

Now that I’m thinking about this more it makes absolutely no sense.
I understand a light clutch in a Accord or a Corolla.
But what limp leg FNG is going to buy a MT truck and complain about the clutch is to heavy? o_O
