Is it just me... or would you be ticked at Toyota

I have a 2014 Tacoma DCSB Sport 6sp with just under 45k miles on it. Two days ago I noticed that the stitching in my shifter knob has let loose and the leather is opening up. When I bought the truck brand new I paid for the extended warranty - bumper to bumper 7yr/100k miles. As soon as I see this, I contacted my local dealer and scheduled an appointment to have this remedied. This morning they take a look at this and tell me that it's not covered under the warranty. They suggest I speak with Toyota extended warranty department and they tell me the same. I am freaking livid at this. WTF am I buying the extended warranty for if crap like this isn't covered??? Am I right to be ticked at this or would you go nuts as well?

Sorry You had to deal with them but that’s my experience with any dealer warranty, it’s excuse after excuse of why everything isn’t covered. Silver lining is you can get a pro knob!

I'd check the fine print of the extended warranty, it usually has exceptions. Besides, gives you a reason to upgrade to a cooler one now.

No. Wouldn’t be ticked. That’s a pretty small issue on an almost 6 year old truck. If anything, I’d be thrilled that’s the only issue.

I wish the extent of my problems was shifter stitching. Lots of other things are waaaay closer to the top of the list.

^ Yeah but OP paid for extended protection.

Get a refund on that extended protection bullshit and grab a PRO knob.

Does the extended warranty cover wear of touch points?

Not that I am implying you made the wrong decision, but unfortunately this is essentially why I never buy anything the dealer is selling in the "finance" department. You are usually (not always) treated as you are with health insurance companies - deny deny deny... they tax your patience and time to get most things covered.

Again, my opinion here.... but saving your money and fixing it yourself is usually a better idea (not always), especially if you finance it.

Sucks man. You could keep pestering them.... or upgrade to new one as people have suggested.

"bumper to bumper" doesn't mean everything on the car is covered. Gotta read the fine print. Would you also expect a new set of floor mats after your right heel has worn a hole in it? Even with CPO cars that have manufacturer-extended warranties, you'll have things that aren't covered. My wife has a BMW X3 that she bought CPO and after her check engine light came on(it's a 2014 and it's now 2019!) indicating an issue with the catalytic converter, she was told her CPO warranty doesn't cover emissions.

I’ve always hated dealer warranties. They might as well be a prorated deposit towards a different vehicle lol

Often an extended warranty is purchased and some expect every little thing to be covered without reading the fine print.
If i was you, yes i would be pissed just because of the money you're paying for it and the little cost to replace it, and you would expect a shift knob to last 100 k.

It was my dealer who was pissed when i turned down any type of extended warranty. They were dumbfounded, its a big money grab for them.

That’s actually hilarious lol. My main issue with dealers is when they say “yeah we take into consideration aftermarket parts” and then says “the bank only cares about the bv” lmao. If they lie to you in the first place, they’re gonna lie to you about the warranty lol

Here's the thing... I get the whole point where something could be a wear item like brake pads, mats, etc. But one in the heck is the stitching on a shift knob not something that should outlast the entire freaking truck. That should be last thing to go. I could also understand if the dealer looked at it and saw a cut in the leather made by something I hit it with that came in contact with the stitching. Then I'd understand them saying something like "you caused this". None of this is the case. In this scenario, the stitching just broke on its own.

And to the user that said this is a 6yr old truck; it's not even 5 yrs old yet. I bought it at the end of June 2014 and it'll hit 5 yrs old this June.

One last comment... there's not a chance in hell I'll replace this part with another Toyota one. I'm not giving these POS a dime of my money to replace this rejected one. Maybe this is just being spiteful but I'm ok with that.

I have the platinum and they're replacing my head unit radio / stereo, no questions asked. Of course it's jacked but I was glad not to have to fight and also glad I was able to make one claim before it expires lol

Looks like you lucked out on that one. My biggest issue with warranties is that they told me a bubble on my tire tread is not covered... however that isn’t the case at all. They tried to convince me my tire had a manufacturer defect from Goodrich. The only bubbles that are a manufacturer defect are if they’re on the sidewall... right?
