Thank you all for the input and safety concerns. And thanks for the suggestion on gusseting this section. I will go ahead and do that. I know that doesn’t make it perfect, but short of starting over which I don’t have the budget or time, it is the best I can think of.

I agree work Greg. The energy transfer is going to snap that tube and it is going to stab your passenger in the head final destination style. Plus on your b pillar your tubes don't like up there either. If you were to roll the energy is going to snap that junction and crush the occupants.

Well you got to start somewhere man and I applaud him for taking the steps making it happen. Im sure things can always be revisited if needed, but I too agree that testing the cage would be an absolute last resort and hopefully never happens.

Correct, you have to start somewhere - but you have to be anal and detail orientated and design something that absolutely best fits the application - in this instance, saving a life.

So as you both have said, it’s not the intention to test the cage or it’s aimed at as a last resort, then clearly you need it to 100% protect you and your passengers from injury or death. If it’s there for an absolute worst case scenario, then it needs to be fabricated to best fit for that application.... that does not mean cutting corners because of laziness. Do it right or pay someone else who can, if you feel the need for a roll cage in your vehicle. And if you feel the need to have a roll cage in your truck, it means you feel the odds are high enough it will get put to use at some point in the trucks life.

These are valid points and considering his transparency in the build its great that fellow members can contribute to worthy criticism to help grow the design where it might be lacking. That said, we will see what the final outcome is, but to say that he is just cutting corners when its still in development might be just a little bit early. As you and others state, the function is for safety and whats to say he still cant achieve that by the time he is done?

How did you work out your process when you built a cage?

The sucky part about having a cage is always needing to wear a helmet - cages and no brain caps don't mix even with proper padding.

He has it painted and is putting the interior back in, I am going to say his 'development' was finished. It may function and be fine but that doesn't make it correct.

When I built my cage for my Ultra 4 4600 car, my team and I made 0 compromises. We did every single thing we could to make that cage as strong as possible. 2” .120 DOM per class specs. Gussets and crosses all meeting at a centralized location. Every frame outrigger was 1/4” with 1/4” plate gussets. If that truck was going to roll, we were going to flip it back and keep going.

So yes I understand that Ryan isn’t going to race his and “doesn’t drive fast” which I don’t believe for a second. But I certainly wouldn’t be making the compromise of 30 more minutes to re-Bend a tube so it meets at the proper junction. I certainly wouldn’t have my B-pillars not meet at a Junction in order to retain factory seat belts.

It’s great, nice work on making your own cage in your own garage. More power to you. It’s extremely difficult to remake a cage though. So if you’re going to do it, follow the basic rules and get it right the first time.

Over build, don’t under build. Regardless of what you think your driving is going to entail.

If he’s going to add gussets like he said, now he gets to remove the headliner and grind/clean up the metal to get the paint off so he can weld again. I usually don’t paint before finishing development...

Why am I being so harsh? If he doesn’t take the guidance/feedback and rolls and kills himself that’s on him. But unlike @Nitori , plenty of people have a passenger that’s not just a pillow riding with them. So it’s only fair not kill others due to laziness.

How did I work out my process? I consulted a professional. And I kept my design, engineering and fabricating skills for armor and other non-life saving pieces.

Do it all the time. Lol we joke a lot, to the point where it’s just a word, no serious meaning lol
To all, it’s okay to joke with your S.O., have been caught in public getting my asshole poked & getting shit talked out of jokes.. it’s nothing real lol after our mere 6 years vs what some of y’all got, it’s just how we’ve ended up. Joking all the time, calling each other names, & at the end of the day, there’s a solid relationship full of love. It is what it is
