That’s the problem. People’s definition of survival is so varied. To some people it’s essentially camping. To me, survival means I’m stuck somewhere, possible injured and have to focus on not dying until help arrives.

Yup. Very few people understand true survival. I think people find it more enlightened to outfit their vehicles with as much as possible to prevent themselves from ever reaching that point. That’s why no matter how much gear or cool gadgets you have, it all falls back on your knowledge and skillset. That’s why I harp so much about the $10 challenge.

    This guy gets it.

I tell this to the doofuses that bury gold coins in their yard.

I can't eat gold or shoot it out of my gun. So, uh, enjoy your gold....

Ive changed my mind. Survival means molle, Velcro, cerakote, kydex, ammunition and the ability to use “pew pew” regularly in a sentence.

I love when I see the survival videos and they're stuffing wads of cash into their bag. It's like, dude, if we're at that kind of survival situation, we're likely trading with bottle caps and squirrel pelts. Those stacks of hundies are basically toiletpaper at that point. lol

Agree. Things like a small set of tools, a foldable shovel, a tow strap and letting someone know where you are as well as properly maintaining your truck are ways to prevent a survival situation. Going into an actual survival situation probably means ya done messed up.
It’s like buying the worlds best helmet en lieu of learning how to ride your motorcycle. You hope that helmet will save your life, but it’s best to never have to test it out.

If Fallout has taught me anything, bottle caps are worth way more than paper money

Not if you live on the coast and you just went through a big earthquake. You have to head east a bit to get out of the quake zone. Or you are in the path of a Tornado, and have to move quick.
Bug out bag should really be called the natural disaster bag.
The odds of your country turning into an apocalypse where you shoot your neighbors is pretty low, really you guys should be helping each other in that situation.

I think your mindset is flawed, cash can be very handy. Consider a situation like Hurricane Katrina, not the theoretical zombie apocalypse. In general in a disaster, society will go on as normal or return to normal in a few days to weeks. USD is the main currency worldwide and the basis for international trade. It can buy influence, safety, food, shelter, etc almost anywhere in the world. It's far more likely you'll need to get out and relocate to a safer area temporarily, so my focus on preparedness is on keeping things normal. Cash is a MAJOR way to ensure that things stay normal, domestically or internationally.

The plan is "life goes on," not "restart life in zombieland." I have a lot more than this in my truck, but in order of my priorities:
    • Copies of identifying documents. EVERYTHING can be recovered from this, because my money's just a number in a bank account that can be recovered if I can prove I'm me.
    • Data - Helps with the above, and is irreplaceable. I work with computers. My data is worth more to me than my house. It's on encrypted drives, no worry about theft.
    • Day 1 needs - water, food, clothes, diapers for the toddler.
    • Day 1 overnight - sleeping bags, warmer clothes and emergency ponchos, a couple of towels, toilet paper.
    • Contingency items (situation is worse than expected) - gas, cash, firearm.
I also just leave my camping gear in the truck's camper top, lots of that is also handy in an emergency. Off the top of my head, first aid kit with meds, axe, waterproof matches, small stove and fuel, cooking utensils, pot, sunscreen, bug spray, knife, full set of tools for the truck, recovery straps, the list goes on and on. I can get something comprehensive if anyone's actually reading this far in and cares.

At the end of the day, it's liberating to have all of that. If my house is on fire, I can leave in under a minute and restore life to normal eventually. It also means impromptu adventures are no big deal, the truck's packed already. Just get more food and clothes for each day. You have to adjust your mindset from irrecoverable societal collapse scenarios to ensuring your family has the basics to ride out a natural disaster or house fire. Once you've done that, it's really easy to pack a couple of duffle bags to keep behind the seats, and sleep easier at night knowing you're more secure if shit hits the fan.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Throw the foldable shovel into your neighbors yard and buy a stubby, solid shovel. The foldable one will make you suicidal with frustration. I’m sure you already know, but just pointing it out that even in a worst case scenario, the foldable IS the worst case scenario.

If I can go somewhere and buy stuff with either green money or an ATM card, I am not in a "survivalist" scenario.

Edit: Unless the bed and breakfast inn doesn't take Discover

Again, the spirit of the BOB isn’t purely Armageddon. It’s when YOUR shit has gone south.

Let’s say you’re having a party. Pizza guy shows up, and you’re all like “how about I pay you in NOOGIES!” And you grab the guy and put him in a choke and he straight up dies. Bro, you gots to go. Get in your truck and leave. You’re good. You got lawyer money, plane money, new clothes money (because you’re covered in blood due to a botched tracheotomy) and a no tell motel plus burner phone money.

The world is moving on whether or not you killed that pizza guy. But after you’ve been on the run for a week, and your bank account is frozen, you gonna wish you had stashed a little.

Now, me, I don’t have that. I spent it all on other bullshit. But that’s why people stash money in BOBs.
