3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

Those bulbs are 5000k so they are more of a white/blue light. The pic/distance makes them look more blue than white though. I think they are comparable to LED color. You can get HIDs in a lower kelvin so they look like a typical warm halogen color.

 

He’s using 5000k color temp HIDs vs the halogens that are 3200k.

I noticed the same thing with regards to output.

As far as the cutoff, try re-aiming your headlights. I posted the process earlier in this thread, but basically all you need is a slight raise of 1/2” or so at 10ft from a wall to significantly improve the down the road lighting without being blinding.

 

So just to make sure I'm understanding correctly, the modification for the harness is literally to complete the cutout in the center and that's it?

Thanks @crashnburn80 for all the research and solid information. Swapped my H11 bulbs for H9s today using the iJDMTOY wiring extension from Amazon. So easy. So much better. Just made the little modification to the extension with a utility knife. Also swapped my fogs for Toyota LEDs- a big improvement. No, I don't currently care that the color temperature doesn't match. If I ever do BHLM I'll change my projectors out for LEDs, but for now, the improvement is drastic. All for about 30 minutes of work. Removed the grille, easy-peasy!

 

You could always use yellow laminex on the LED fogs to knock the color temp down so the colors were closer in temp and better suited for poor weather conditions.

 

I may do that! I often drive in pretty terrible weather. Especially in Wyoming (basically all winter). The taco fogs are 4", no?

Read through a LOT of posts and couldn't find or didn't understand what I'm asking, if someone else asked it.

Do any bulbs make the side brighter - not the forward light, but something that helps you see the side of the road? I almost never use brights, don't want to blind people with the fog lights, but would like something that was less of a V pattern and had a greater spread?

Ordered the GE 130+ from Amazon, but can easily be returned. I think the factory lights are better than what I had before as far as forward projection, but I miss the lack of width from previous vehicle - it seemed to have a 220+ degree pattern and I miss seeing the ditches or when making a turn, I can't see if someone it about to cross the street from behind me - no light pole at the end of our road a lots of walkers.

TRD OR, so I assume the fogs are H11, but I don't won't to blind people, and most night drivers with fog lights on in clear conditions are blinding to me.

 

You're not going to change the angle of the beam pattern and still have decent headlight projection with the OEM assemblies, although you can provide more light within that same pattern. With the GE +130 it is going to focus more light in the heart of the beam for better distance projection which is a significant improvement, however, the Philips H9s covered in post #2 will do a better job at providing more light to the side of the pattern than the GE +130s.

Most OEM fogs do a poor job of glare control. Upgrading your fog to an SAE LED fog assembly will provide stronger cut offs with less glare:

My 2019 SR5 has H9's for HIGH beams. I was able to plug the H11 to the pig tail but I was unable to clock the bulb into the socket. I tried every angle and even brut force but zero chance on making those three triangle teeth go into the three triangle spots. I found the same exact thing problem when I tried to insert the H11 onto the fog socket.

If you put H9 into the low beams you need to trim the one tab to fit it in.

 

What brand H9s are you using? Nearly every H9 I have tried will fit, save Xencn, but some do take finesse and angling the bulb just right to get it started.

Your factory fogs are H16 on the non-TRD trucks.

 

I actually had the same issue using the Phillips on my 2017 SR5. Just took a pair of diagonal cutters and trimmed a little bit off the wide tab on the bulb.

 

Will definitely be easier to fit that way.

 

if leds and hids produce unacceptable glare in reflector based housing, why does my 2019 sequoia sport come equipped with led lighting in both heads (hi and low) and led fogs? just a question i always wondered, probably ever since hids came oem in reflector based cars like the is300, tl/cl variants, and maxima since the early 2000s, and thats just off the top of my head, im sure there are more!
