Maybe this being an engine thats been mainly used in front wheel drive cars has something to do with it?

I have never seen under the valve covers, but maybe its lacking drains back to the sump in the rear of the head/s which has the pcv port. A good stream of fluid thru the pcv hose into the intake can hydrolock an engine or at best foul plugs.

As for the low oil pressure, its pretty inexcusable and it sounds like the sump/oil pickup design is lacking Combined with oil pooling in the head not making it back down. I bet toyota will revise the design in future releases? (4th gen maybe or new 4runner)

So on the original post you put in the thread you say it went through about 20 inches of water, yet in your rant on your never buy a Tacoma website you say 9 or 10 inches.. hmm

I remember that the FJ cruiser had a advertised 700mm or almost 28 inches of fording depth straight from toyota. These numbers also have alot of CYA margin from toyota I bet.

I would hope to believe that the tacomas have a similar spec being that the intake setup is similar and also the engine has the accesories in similar locations.

20 inches should not phase a tacoma or any truck or suv. I have been in water splashing over the hood (3-3.5 ft) in brief moments in our 94 land cruiser and it thankfully made it through some floods we had some years ago in my area. In my experience, toyotas have had some pretty badass water fording abilities.

Id bet that toyotas 700mm max fording on FJ cruisers is the height of something important, such as the alternator or ecu in the cabin

Fearthisbeard - Yup first post was a guess.

I recently went back to the photos, measured the same level on my wheels - and got 9-10 inches. You included the photo of the water ford in your comment - what does it look like to you?

I'm not sure what your point is though?

How? All your doing is adding a catch can in the lope. It still runs to the intake like normal after the can.

How about an Air/Oil separator? (Similar to a Catch Can except the oil and water mix drains back into the engine.)

There is a military facility in Aberdeen MD (APG) their work there is to see just how much a vehicle or equipment will take before they trash it.

How many miles were on your truck when the engine blew?

Everyone knows a new engine has to break in. Plenty of Hellcats, Demons, Lightnings and what not blew up within 2k miles because folks would haul ass and not give the engine proper break in time.

The FJ Cruiser's fording depth numbers are correct. Toyota of Australia mentioned these numbers in this video.

    https://youtu.be/xlYSfKycYpI

The North American and Australian FJ's are nearly identical.

Interestingly, I can't find any Tacoma waterfording numbers produced from Toyota anywhere. That is pretty concerning if you ask me.

That's my concern too. If it fouls the same plug each time, it makes me think valve guide seals. If it is not consistently the same plug, then it could be pulling oil into the intake, which a catch can should fix. If it's the valve guide seals, then a catch can would do nothing. Neither of those explain the lack of oil pressure though. That does appear to be a pickup issue. Maybe a baffled oil pan needs to be brought into the equation. Either way, this is definitely something Toyota should have done differently.

Do the hi-lux have waterfording spec? Should be similar to Tacoma right?

The Hilux and Tacoma are different. The Tacoma has different electrical systems for emissions. The Hilux has diesel options although they use the same 2.7 gas engine as the Tacoma. I wouldn't trust a Hilux waterfording comparison as a base for a Tacoma.

What exactly did Toyota do to the engine? If it trashed bearings you need an accumulator not a catch can. I'm still leaning on flooded valve covers it's either getting past the valve guides or being sucked up by the PVC.
