If they're not leaking you don't have to replace them when I did my valve covers mine weren't leaking and were stuck good

I replaced everything else but the half Moons and everything is good I have zero leaks but if they do leaked it's a lot of work to go back in there

maybe... if you have the D/S apart replace them as that is the pain in the rear side to do over if you "guess" wrong. Use Toyota's FIPG (form in place gasket) stuff.

I was just about to reassemble & I saw this. Guess I should give it a try.
Can I get silicone spray on the camshaft? Or do I spray only on the back?

Yeah, definitely take a few extra minutes to get it done properly. It would sure suck for that to start leaking and you have to start the whole thing over again.

So far so good. Got two out thanks to @Wyoming09 silicone spray thingy. Finishing up driver’s side & then hopefully the same results on the passenger’s.
& I couldn’t tell you what was leaking or not. It was a freakin’ mess. Hall of shame for sure. One of the plugs had oil in it. Like a numbnut I pulled it out before sticking a rag down there. Crossing fingers is all I can do. Now to make sure I hook everything back up....

So all went well. The 4th one was a PITA, but I gave it one last (I probably would'a done 3 or 4 more. Pays to be stubborn aka determined) try & it finally gave it up. The truck is so much happier. Got some of the old pep in her step back. At the rate I'm going I'll have practically a brand new '01 Tacoma with 233,000 pretty soon.... Thank you all....

You did the full moons too I hope?

There is a great sticky above for it. Step by step.

I think the moons are more prone to leak than the gaskets.

Run your hand behind the head, if oily, moons are leaking.

Yup. Got 'em. That 4th one that I referred to was the 4th 1/2 moon. So now I got'a ask, what purpose do they serve?

full moons are complete circles. requires removing a cam journal cover.

LOOK AT THE STICKY OR READ MANUAL.

You are lucky to even get 1/2 assed info. asking on here any given time.

I used that sticky for the job. Didn't see anything about what the purpose of the 1/2 moons is, nor in the manual. No biggie though. I can try looking it up. I'm simply a curious sort.... Thank you though....

The full circles are so the head can be used on either side of the engine and for drilling the intake cam journals.
The 1/2 circles are from drilling the exhaust cam journals in the casting.

    BTW back of engine.
