Hello! Newer member here that has been lurking for months trying to absorb as much as I can. Getting better at all the acronyms that are used on this site, lol.

I’m in the market for a new truck and waiting for the 2020’s to drop. I’d like to fit 33’s on the truck with a great suspension. To keep it simple, what would be better:

TRD OR with OME BP51 suspension

    Or

TRD Pro with factory fox + ??

I feel the OME suspension will allow for 33’s on the off-road model. Not sure what I’ll have to do on the Pro to fit 33’s. Main questions:

-which would provide the better ride on and off road?

-can you fit 33’s on the pro suspension? If not, what modifications are needed to fit?

Long term goals include, bed cap, decked drawer system, and bumpers. Out the gate is suspension, wheels/tires. Thank you for any help in this matter.

Depends on the wheels and width of the tire. People have got 33s to fit on stock wheels on the stock suspension OR. 255s will fit without rubbing or cutting as well.

On our local section members have has issues with BP51s leaking only after a couple of thousand of miles. Plus they are not a true 2.5" shock.

The pro shock IMO is a better ride all around stock compared to a stock OR on BP51s but the pros fox shocks will be rather worthless after you start modding it a lot.

That being said getting one of the bigger names like ADS, Kings, Fox and Icons will better suit your needs later down.

If you dont care about having the PRO name plate and are going to mod it up anyway, the OR is a better buy. I'm about ~9k worth of mods into the truck that would have gone into the base price of the Pro and don't regret buying the Pro at all.

Check out my build thread if you have any questions about my set up!

If I could do it again I would have gone with the OR...bought a pro with no plan to mod the suspension but I should have known I wouldn’t have been able to resist...that being said I was able to fit 285s on the stock suspension with no CMC. (Stock wheels)

285/75/16s and no rubbing for me!

Only reason I wouldnt get a pro is if you're planning on going bigger, or adding a shitload of weight and broverlanding

Thanks for the information, I didn't realize people were having issues with the BP's. I'll have to do more research. I was leaning towards them because I figured they were on up there with the bigger names like King and Fox but came in at a lower price point.

    BP51 kit = $3200
    King kit = $4700
    Fox kit = $4120

Haven't looked at Icon or ADS. As far as tire size, I was thinking around the 285/75r16 range. Thank you again for the advice and information about the BP's.

Nice! So they will (should) fit. Good to know. Also good to know that the OR might be a better starter. Current 2019 prices (locally) have me at:

    Loaded out OR: $41,509
    TRD Pro: $46,749

Not sure what the 2020 prices will be and how much of a difference there will be in price between the 2. Was seeing if the ~$5k difference in price was worth it? My family and I do a lot of camping/fishing/hunting. I don't need some rock crawling crazy trail machine. I live in Oklahoma, fairly flat. Usually have to worry about mud more then anything. Just want to be able to have a little clearance for running an AT tire in the 33" range as I've found it to be my preferred tire size no matter what truck I've owned. Have gone bigger and smaller, and 33" seems just right.

Thanks for the information! No overlanding dreams for me here. Just something that is practical for my needs. The bed cap would come in super handy to keep a lot of our stuff (along with our dog) out of the elements. I like the decked drawer systems to have a nice flat surface to build off of and to be able to organize/store my equipment based on what I'm doing (bird hunting, deer hunting, fishing, etc). Shouldn't exceed payload in the back. I hope.

Bfg makes mud terrain in 255/85/r16 I believe. 33" that should fit stock suspension.

You should be fine then. Really that extra 5-6k you'll pay for the pro comes down to whether or not you want a leather interior and if you want to be able to get extra sendy. I can tell you that leather is the best choice for an offroad vehicle BY FAR. It took one time to get stuck in a mud hole and have my interior covered in mud for me to realize that. A few months later my truck looks brand new after being apocalyptic inside. (with the help of all weather floor mats, of course). If you're ok with the stock OR suspension and dont mind going with a smaller tire, id go TRDOR

Thanks again. Must haves are leather. Especially with kids. And i'd really like dual climate control since my wife and I run on 2 totally different body temps, lol. I think the loaded out option of the TRD OR has both leather and the climate control. Could be wrong on that though.

You can definitely get those brands for far less than what big websites are asking for.

Since I'm mainly doing slow technical trails I did not need the race suspension type stuff so I opted for Icon stage ones since I have a very little chance of overheating my shocks. They did great on a several hundred mile off road trip even without the reservoir. PM Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road and she could give you a good idea of what you might need that's better than the Pro's suspension.

Dude, dual climate control is so underrated. I'll be running max cool and the GF is next to me full blast heat. idk, just seems to me if you're gonna pay 41k for a trd OR, thats only $1000 less than I paid for my lightly used TRDPRO. I think the most important thing is get the exact one you want or you'll be kicking yourself every time you see someone with your dream truck. To me its worth the extra 50-100 bucks a month to know i wouldn't have any other truck.

That's perfect! I'll definitely give her a call. That fox suspension quote was from headstrong off-road, but I could have been adding more than what i need (think it was a level 4 kit).

Exactly, I'm always hot and my wife is always cold. Never will understand that. I really like this guys setup here:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/bray1197s-2017-tacoma-trd-pro-overland-build.494221/

+/- a few things. But the overall stance with bed cap ( I really like the Snugtop Rebel) is what i'm looking to achieve. Might have to copy and paste some of what he's done and go from there.

Cant argue with that build I think 17 pro in cement is the sexiest, but I'm biased. But yeah that stance is bone stock with the 4runner wheels, which have more negative offset, and probably the reason he had to trim. I like the 4runner wheels better but based on the fact i'm only about an inch away from the cab mount at the closest, I'm afraid I would have to cut it (see: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...nt-that-is-so-big.610943/page-3#post-20686964 ). That guy did a LOT to that truck but cosmetically a couple grand for the topper and the racks +tires and any cement trd pro looks identical. Takes a really small amount of effort to make it bad ass.

Can’t go wrong with either! I’m biased because I have a 19 TRD OR. In my area, new pro’s were firm at the $46,700ish MSRP, whereas I purchased my fully loaded TRD OR at $38,500 ($3k off MSRP) There’s no doubt that half of that 8k difference could buy you a better setup than the stock pro, BUT there is undoubtedly something very cool about the pro.

For the 2020 model, if you go with the premium package, both the OffRoad and the Pro will have the same interior options. The only difference is that the Pro has stitched leather seat emblems and a couple of TRD Pro trimmings here and there. Both will have power-adjustable seats and the leather is most likely identical.

Apart from the dual climate control, the heated seats and JBL audio were a huge win for me. I absolutely love the JBL sound and the heater seats. For 2020, you will also get CarPlay/Android Auto, which is great!

Like others have mentioned, the MSRP prices are one thing. But the dealerships may be running a diff price. For instance, my truck was listed for 42k, but I got for much less. One thing to consider is that the OffRoad might have a bigger price cut than the Pro. At least in my experience...

Thanks gents! I'm leaning heavily towards the OR with Premium and Technology packages (what's offered currently for 2019). We'll see what packages are offered for the 2020 model and go from there. It looks like you can get the leather/heated seats and dual climate with the OR and the packages I listed previously. So, i'll be in the ball park. Take that, call Marie and go from there. I think the ~$5k savings (possibly more) would allow for a nice suspension setup, wheels and tires and possibly the bed cap. Versus, buying the pro, adding stiffer leafs and the bed cap (~$3500 on top of pro price).

I was shopping for an OR when I saw the pro that I ultimately ended up with. It was only listed at about 2 grand more than a loaded out OR, plus it was on the lot and ready to go. I think because the majority of people are scared of a MT. If I would have been looking at a truck that was going to cost me 5-6 grand more I would have just waited until the right OR came along. As far as capability goes, my buddies bone stock OR went everywhere my lifted pro went at big bend a few weeks ago...these are some pretty capable trucks right from the factory.

If you plan to gut out the OR suspension why pay for it in the first place?

Get an SR or SR5, give it a good quality lift, mount some good 33” tires, add a rear locker or TrueTrac, and you have a kickass truck.

If you want leather and dual climate control, then you need an OR with Premium package or Pro. Although you can get some great aftermarket leather seats these days intalled through the dealer. The dual climate control is a bit trickier.
