-01 transmission issue

Hoep you can assist me in an issue that popped up recently on my baby

-01 with a 2.4L, W59 transmission, 179K on it, rock stock. Used for years as a daily driver.

Last week when slowing or coasting in third gear, she started to pop out of gear and grind a bit.

I assume this means I'm losing the syncro, just wanted to confirm, and decide what options there are.
Any chance this is the shifter seat? I would think if it was it would be an issue in all gears, but don't know for sure.

If I have to swap the transmission who makes a good rebuilt? Was looking at the marlin crawler one, any of you have experience with them?

 

Seems that way. Check to make sure there's no slop in the shifter. Isn't there a bushing it rides on?

 

I would start with the shifter seat bushing, the original OEM ones are known to crumble apart after so many years/miles and that'll do what you're describing. Marlin Crawler makes an upgraded one

Thanks all for the feedback, its a cheap solution if it works and that's always good- they have a deal on right now for the seat and the shift knob bushing. I just placed an order and will let you know what happens.

 

Late update, been on the road for weeks and finally got time to look into it. You guys were right about the shift bushing

Holy crap that old seat literally was crumbling- it seemed to be a rubber-ish base, attached to a hard plastic ring, and the plastic was in 50-60 pieces. The swap went quick and easy once it got cleaned up, and it feels a lot more positive in shifting. Will test it this weekend once I get a minute.


Since I'm in the area, figure a gear oil change is in order- any suggestions?

 

Glad to hear, I need to change my bushing out too one of these days.

Redline MT90 is great oil to use for the manual trans, will make the shifting feel smooth as silk along with that new bushing. It's pricey at about $50 or $55 for a 4 qt jug but worth it.

 

I was going to go w MT90, and the guy at the shop talked me in to the Amsoil- not cheap at 19/qt., but then again its not like I have to do this every year. Much smoother shifting, the 3rd gear pop-out is gone, so for about 100 dollars total, this was a great result.
