Personally, I would only use synthetic tree oil. :)

Oh man. I miss those cans!

Yeah, they were a freaking mess, but memories of changing oil and rotating tires with my dad.

I had a '79 4x4 LB that had 170K on it and it burned a quart of oil every month, so after 5 months my oil was changed.

    This
Female ex-coworker would come to me every ten days or so telling me her oil light is on. I would be, "f**k, that's serious". I would put two and a half qts of oil in her Cavalier & she would be on her way. Did that for months, I finally told her to stop buying oil, I have oil at home for you. I would bring a gallon of waste oil to work, overfill it by a quart & she could go two weeks without me checking the oil. How that friggin' Cavalier didn't blow up was beyond me??

Because brand of oil doesn't really matter much at all. You can put crisco in there and it will run

Why I love chainsaws, need to think about TWO kinds of oil to run one! Very efficient that way.

If it didn't, it would show up in the oil analyses. I've looked at the filter when I change the oil, they don't look bad at all. You could send it in, but honestly, if it were bad enough to "plug up" and open the bypass, you should see it with the naked eye.

Because there is more to it than just viscosity.... and who says that the "traditional" viscosity wasn't really too much to begin with. Manufacturing/Design/Engineering has managed to sharpen the pencil on calculations since we have better tools to do such evaluations.... plus they test this stuff.

As far as longevity, I have gas turbines and steam turbines that get years on oil.... heck, I've got a 60MW steam turbine that has 16 years since the oil was last changed. Follow the data, it will tell you what you need to do.

I think of full synthetic like I think of "all natural" foods. Of course it's synthesized, isn't everything?

It was probably leaking oil somewhere.... if it were burning that much, I'd think the O2s would go out and the Catalytic Converter would plug up.... something like that anyways.

Probably a combo of leak and burn. The CEL was probably on and the trim was full rich.

I love meeting people like that. It helps keep my anal overly-protective care-taking in check knowing that there are people who don't do shit about their stuff and it lasts them for ever.

Fuck my u-joints, I ain't greasin' shit no more!

I keep forgetting to do it since 20k has clicked by. That stuff is fun anyway.

I am curious to see how long the no-fitting joints on the rear shaft last.

Agreed, it's just one of those hotly contested oil debates, this subforum usually 'delivers' w/ regards to debates ;)

I'd just like more info from Toyota re: US version of an engine/thinner oil VS overseas version/greater viscosity; and what measures were taken to ensure longevity.
Obviously toyota's got the engineering figured out, no longevity issues exist, but I'm just curious.

That is hilarious. But then, they will probably cut the CV boots to check and see if that lube is still good.
