I am considering buying a new 23ft Airstream Flying Cloud. It has a dry weight of 4800 pounds. I'm concerned that my truck might not be up to the task, especially in mountainous regions. I would appreciate any feedback. (The Airstream salesman is certain that my truck will tow it just fine. Is it possible he might not have my best interests in mind?)

The truck is rated for that much weight.
The real thing to adjust is your expectations of what a small n/a v6 will happily pull.
If you expect to go slowly, which you will, you'll likely be fine.
And don't be afraid to rev the fuck out of it

I haven't towed with my Tacoma yet, but I did plenty of times in my previous Silverado - well over capacity a few times as well.

It won't be 4800 pounds when you load it up. Also, any mods to your TRD PRO such as a lift?

Personally, I would never tow a trailer over 3500 pounds dry weight with my stock OR. Anything bigger, I'd consider getting an F-150.

    4800lbs is borderline for sure.

Towing with confidence is a lot more important than just will it tow it.

As mentioned about 3800lbs dry weight is the upper range for confident towing with these trucks In my opinion.

I love the air streams but I think you might be better off going with a smaller size lower weight version like the 19ft or 20ft. Having said that the 23ft is a tandem axle which has its pluses.

Airforums has some people talking about pulling their airstreams with tacoma's with mostly good reviews on various sizes.

If you grab one please post pics!

Good towing review with similar weights to what you have

The truck is rated for what, 6400lbs or so? With Today's litigation, you can be sure Toyota did the math on what it can tow safely.

/confidence/ has more to do with the driver than the set-up

I'd peruse the owner's manual, I want to say it recommends a weight-distributing and anti-sway hitch above X pounds?

That said, I've yet to tow with this taco yet ;)

4800lbs dry will be will be pretty heavy loaded unless you're light packers. It's not all about getting going, it's stopping.

If you've got a current trailer, weigh everything youve got in there now. 1600 lbs is super easy to get to.

I'm guessing I had over 4K all said and done here yesterday, and with a 3-n-1 spacer/block kit, massive bro lean as a result!

By the time you load everything in, your towing experience will not be good. Buy a Ram or Ford to do the job. Guy I know has a 2500 Ram with the Cummings diesel and he gets 15 mpg pulling 10,000 lbs. Your Tacoma will get 15 mpg pulling 5000 lbs.

Used to get 17.5 or so at best when stock. After moving to 275/70/17 E-loads it instantly went down 14mpg. Even times I've driven very gently on an entire tank of gas.

I’m certain the salesman only has one true interest... selling you a trailer. If he’s so certain, hook it up and take the trailer for a spin. Tell him you’re going to check as many terrain conditions as you can in your local area, and you’ll return the trailer on Tuesday morning (after all, it’s a long weekend).

Good safe practice is to keep the trailer weight to less than 75% of max capacity if towing anywhere other than close to sea level and relatively flat locations. If hilly and in high elevations (greater than 3500 feet, consider the 75% rule). My 2018 Limited door sticker says max payload is 966 lbs (after deducting the yellow sticker info)... with minimal gear, the wife and myself, plus 500 lbs tongue weight, I’m maxed out. So, 4800 lbs should be max wet/equipped ready to camp weight... not dry weight.

    You didn't need E-loads. 1 tons need E-Loads.
