No power steering after Pump/Rack and pinion replacement.

All. My power steering abruptly failed last week, so I installed a new pump. No joy there, so I replaced the rack and pinion and installed a filter in the return line. Still no power steering. I am out of ideas here. Anyone have suggestions?

This may be a silly question, but did you re-bleed the system?

I know these vids are for replacing the rack, but there's a bit in there about bleeding the power steering, too.

Not a silly question at all. Yes, I did go through the motions of bleeding the system while the wheels were off the ground. Doing more research, I came across the reservoir clogged screen issue. Pulled mine off again and it was really clogged. Just cleaned it and a LOT of crud came out after multiple cleanings. Will reinstall and report back.

Clogged screen was the problem. Perhaps the new pump and/or rack and pinion were unnecessary? Wish I had known about the possibility of clogged screen last week!

Power steering returns!!

 

Ouch! That's a painful lesson.

Seems like racks usually just start to leak rather than quit completely and suddenly.

Not sure what a cheapo rack is, but it is not the $169.00 rack from Amazon. It's not genuine Toyota, but it was still 5 bills.

It's a new (not reman) Atlantic.

 

Anything but the cheap 'new' Chinese one branded under a few different names. All same junk, lifetime warranty but people change it yearly or so lmao. Not sure man, good luck with it though. You at least sound proficient working on your truck so you'll be good. Labor is always the big killer

 

Never heard about the clogged screen that was a expensive lesson !!

 

Yes...labor is a major consideration! Been working on my cars and motorcycles since 1972. (Yikes!) My first rack, though. I'm thinking the cost to take it to the shop and resolving the screen problem would have exceeded the cost for parts, so it's all good. Just for grins, I'll keep the original Toyota rack.

Damn, magnefine filter here I come. I already have it on my transmission line too.

 

The crud in the reservoir was coming off in small sheets, and it took boiling it out on the stove with a commercial detergent to get it clean.

It is not difficult to remove the reservoir from the 2.7 Liter 4 cylinder motor. Pop off the drive belt and PS pump pulley; remove three small bolts and pull the reservoir right off (after evacuating the fluid). There is a small O-ring that will need replacing. In hindsight, it is well worth doing! I did add a filter in the return line.
Ounce of prevention versus 600 pounds of cure.

Also reset the toe-in as per another thread here at Tacoma World. Worked a treat!

I'm having exact same issue after having a new rack installed and installing a new pump. Where exactly is the screen filter for the reservoir? Was about to order new lines but I'll check the screen first.

 

Well shit !! Add me to this issue I just did the same rack & pump swap clean the screen on reservoir prior to installing rack just to see if it would fix the issue and no luck. After replacing everything now wheel is hard on left turns but no noise coming from rack or pump like when you have no fluid . I research about the intermittent shaft under the brake pedal that connects to the rack have it ujoins an can dry up within time hoping this is my issue. anyone on this shaft fix how to ?

 

It's as the very bottom of the reservoir, there are a few youtube videos showing how to clean it out with brake cleaner. Here's the pic I took of mine:

Did the brake cleaner clean it good? I've got mine off now and its stopped up bad. Also does anyone know what the filter screen is made of so I'll kinda know what not to use? Suck as brake parts cleaner maybe?

 

I would guess the screen is stainless steel. It's been 5 years, so I don't remember the process I used exactly. I think I sprayed into the top to get things loose and then sprayed from the bottom to flush the bits out. My screen wasn't all that dirty though, don't think I spent more than 10-15 minutes cleaning it.

 

Well I been cleaning on it for a couple hours. Got most of the junk out. I used brake parts cleaner then CARB n choke cleaner then brake fluid then flushed the shit out of it with water hose. Then blew it out good with air hose. Now its setting in the sun to dry good n once more gonna blow it out good with air.
These people that are putting filters in the line, I suspect they're putting them on the pressure line or else if you have any trash left bits gonna go into the rack right? How much pressure is on the PS hose?
