Added AVID OFFROAD Step Rails today *PICS*

I ordered these from Brandon, took about 3 weeks to my door, sanded and coated them over 36 hours, then about 15 min to install(with 2 people). The sandpaper($4) and coating(2x$8) I bought at WALLY WORLD. Brandon included the 3M sandpaper grip stuff for the steps, but I left them off to see how well this coating holds up. Brandon does a great job, fit like a glove in existing holes!!

 

They turned out great. Use caution till u apply the tape (if you do) as they may be slippery when wet.

Very nice.....X2 on the slippy, I put grip tape on my sliders for this very reason.

This may be a stupid question, but, Did you spray one side of them, wait for it to dry and flip it over or what? Mine are in the mail and it just hit me the other day... How am I going to paint these things?

 

I'm assuming you could probably just hang them up parallel to the ground and "fog" on several coats so they don't run??

 

Ya, I dont' have a big shop or anything and they are pretty heavy so I just sprayed what I could on one side, waited a couple hours, then flipped them over and did the other side. There were spots where I didn't reach from either angle so I would kinda tilt them to get those spots. I concentrated more on the top side that would obviously get stepped on..prolly coated the tops for the actual steps 3 times. I just went basically til I ran outta the stuff in the cans. i tried to get each coat just light enough to where nothing ran, and it really never did. If I could have hung them up somehow, it would have definitly saved some time...and my garage floor!

 

texture wise it's basically a like a spray in...I didn't want to be too rough with it just yet, but it seems like it will hold up well. I'm going to give it another couple days, then be a little rough with the steps and see how they hold up.

 

I painted my steps yesterday and put them on today! But, I made the mistake of getting the 3m undercoating instead of the truck bed coating. It looked ok when I sprayed them but when they dried they look kind of clumpy. You cant really see it in this pic but I will try to take a closer one and post it. Thanks for the suggestions, just sorry that I found a way to mess it up.

Thanks for posting the pics. My Avid bars are sitting in the middle of the floor right now. They came about a week ago and I just haven't stopped long enough to paint them and install them. I don't have a shop so I guess I'll have to do it outside, but since it's been 100+ with high humidity I've been a little hesitant to do it. Any painters out there know if I'll have any problems if I paint these things outside in high heat and humidity? I suspect that the high humidity will at a minimum slow down the drying time.

 

don't know if this helps, but down here in Dallas, it was over 100 for about 3 weeks straight! I painted one coat Friday night, one Saturday morning, and another Saturday night, then sprayed what I had left Sunday morning, and installed Sunday evening. I did it all in my garage w/ the door cracked open, but of course when I went to bed i closed it, and they dried just fine. I didn't want to paint outside just b/c I didn't want dirt and stuff getting on them while wet. I don't know about spray paint, but the bed liner dried rather quickly.
