Need a good wireless N router any ideas?

Hi guys,

I need a new router and want a good 802.11N router. I found a pretty good deal at my local costco for a D-Link DIR-825 router for $109. Link below of the router. If you guys have any other better recomendations please let me know. My other friend told me that I should get the Apple Airport Extreme. I like apple but want a good router not just a good name.

I have the Apple Airport express and I love it, its better than most dlinks out. If you have the money the Airport Extreme is the way to go!

 

I've heard of a few problems out of the 855. But could just be user error. I have not had any direct experience with it tho.

On the other hand, the 655 mentioned above has outperformed most Wireless N routers I have encountered. Its on sale right now at Newegg for $75.00 with free shipping which is a STEAL! As always, do your research before buying, but definitely consider this router.

What type of setup are you looking at? Where will the router be located and how many walls between it and the pc? Will it be on the same level? Also, make sure your computers NIC (network adapter) is rated for 802.11n. If not, you will just be paying extra for the same speed you have with 802.11g

I just replaced the one downstairs with another Netgear wireless N, so I didn't need the dlink anymore, it worked great though, still have the install disc, just no box.

 

Nice this might be an option. I am however a bit torn between the D-Link and the Airport Extreme. I have a Mac with N capability and the router will be about 2 rooms away and going through approximately 2-3 walls on the same floor. If anyone has good facts on why the airport is a better choice or if the d-link is better please explain.

Another vote for the Dlink DIR 655. Mine's been very stable and good reception. The DIR 655 was one of the best N routers a few years back when first released and has proven to be a good long term performing product.

b, g, n are all substandards of IEEE 802.11 standards which covers wireless networking. The deeper in the alphabet you go, the greater the bandwidth and range.

 

802.11a operates at speeds up to 54 Mbps and on the 5Ghz band, therefore it does not interfere with things such as your cordless phone. But signal is rather weak.

802.11b operates at speeds of 11 Mbps and on the 2.4Ghz band.

802.11g operates at speeds up to 54 Mbps and on the 2.4Ghz band.

802.11n operates at speeds up to 300 Mbps (i think??) and can operate on either the 5Ghz band or the 2.4Ghz band.

Someone correct me if I'm off on something that was off the top of my head.

 

I think I am going to go with the D-Link DIR-825 since that router has Gigabit ports for a faster connected connection and the Apple one doesn't. Unless that isn't a big deal I think that's whats going to move me towards the D-Link.

 

Unless you need the extra range, you have a corporate-grade ISP, or you are constantly moving large files between computers, save the money and keep with G.

 

I have the D-Link Extreme N Simultaneous dual band and it sucks ass. I hate the thing. The range is shit. I have it mounted at the top of the hallway. its about 50ft to my garage computer through 1 wall that has no metal in it. The garage PC has a PCI card with a 7DBi External antenna. I can pick up the neighbors router as good as mine.

I'm also shopping for a good router that has range and I'm only running DSL. Anyone try the NETGEAR - RangeMax Wireless-N 150 Router? It has pretty good reviews from bestbuy.

 

Still kind of lost.................who makes the best long range wireless router?............One end of my house has a weak signal and I want to boost it somehow....................

 

I have had nothing but bad luck with D-Link and Netgear routers. Just always seemed like shit products.

I would really recommend Belkin because of range and warranty. I have one in the ceiling of my office (Belkin N1 with MIMO) and ppl connect to it across a busy street over 100 yards away.

I used to recommend Linksys as well but ever since they went with the new design of no external ant their performance has been next to horrible.

If you do not do any gaming or video streaming, then just get the E1000.

 

I say go with the apple extreme base station. I hate d-link and always had problems with them (maybe just my luck) linksys is a better brand but Apple just makes the best router. Plus you can add a hard drive an do wireless back up with the included usb, and if you have a mac it's perfect for time machine! I've had mine for just over a year and zero problems.
