What kind of gains? Are there any dyno numbers?

There's a lot more to my tune than WOT power (which hasn't really shown much on the dyno). But I'll let the folks running the N/A tuning speak for themselves on what they think rather than "sell you" on it.

I dyno’d my stock truck. Results are here and my build thread, on my iPad now so can’t post them again. As stated, it didn’t show much as far as gains.... yet. I have picked up about 1.5 mpg and my drivability is far improved. Truck feels much more linear in the power delivery, I’ll never go back to a non tuned taco.

Worth it for the throttle mapping alone. I had been looking at a throttle commander when this was released for our engines and it completely eliminates the need for one in addition to everything else you can do with it.

The MPG gains are a nice touch (2ish mpg so far, after I got over the "holy shit this thing has some giddyup I'm going to WOT everywhere now" part). Engine seems smoother and more linear now, too, with less of a need to rev it out to feel any giddyup. I run a MT so I can't speak to the benefits of changing shift points, etc but can attest that a large grade where I'd normally shift into 5th, I can stay in 6th for.

I'd also say it was well worth the extra few bucks for @JustDSM 's tune and help, rather than struggling to figure it out on my own. I've made a few changes to what he gave me here and there and it's a strangely satisfying feeling to be able to tinker with the tune and settings.

Mine is tuned also my point is on a naturally aspirated engine you wont see 15, 20, 30 hp gains. It's more about driveability and maybe mpg.

I suppose it all depends on what you consider “GAINZ”

It's a lot of money to just blindly say "do it!" and plunk down your credit card. But I'm N/A and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Dyno results don't mean much to me when you get:

-better throttle response due to custom throttle mapping
-better MPG. I'm seeing some really respectable GAINZ
-smoother power at all throttle positions
-pulls stronger to redline at WOT. Stock tune fell flat at 4,100 RPM+. New tune pulls strong all the way through the next gear.
-ability to turn view and modify PIDS and get updates on more parameters

and a whole world of trans mapping that I've barely messed with.

I know Gadget has touted his maf cal to gain 15 hp on a bone stock Tacoma. That is just leaning out the afr in open loop (WOT).
If that is a true story, then a good tuner could gain at least that when playing with other variables (spark, VVTI).

BUT, as others have already stated very well, there is soooooo much more to tuning than WOT. Its the driveability improvements from idle up until WOT (everyday driving) that you will love the most. It really is tailoring a vehicles power delivery how YOU want it. It makes all the difference in the world for driver enjoyment!!!

No I don't get anything from HPtuners or @JustDSM. I just love to tinker and my opinion is this is the best thing to come along for Tacoma's since Toyota started rolling the 2005 off the assy line! To me it is absolutely completely and totally worth it.

AWESOME! Congrats on your purchase! You're in for a treat.

Now that HPTuners has support for the Tacoma in the Full-Version, I'd recommend people to use the latest release of the full version unless you're doing development work and need the absolute latest in features/beta testing.

You'll want the VCM Suite (Full-Version) and drivers yes sir.

If you don't already have the credits pre-loaded (when you purchased the device) you may want to go ahead and get those once you install your VCM Suite and register your MPVI2 on the HPTuners site. Even if you have the credits, you'll still want to register the device and create an account.

Regarding the Mac you'll need to use Bootcamp or another method to run Windows, as the VCM Suite does not work on Mac OS.

Hit me up via PM/email anytime if you need help.

Like others have said, the throttle response is much better. I can now hold 6th gear on a hill that I used to have to downshift into 5th. If you have a late 2nd gen with the SAI system, the tuner is worth it to eliminate that potential failure alone. I'm on my 2nd tank of fuel and it's looking like possibly about 2mpg better.

I swapped an AGM battery into my 2005 and was reading up on charging it and remembered your post so thought I'd share.

I installed a gm diode (not sure if it's also a fuse) into the alt fuse position. It adds roughly .5 to .7 volts more than stock to support the AGM battery's charging requirements.
It requires light sanding/filing on each side in order to fit in the fuse holder but it works fine. I've been using it for 6 months or so now.
I can get the part # if anyone is interested.

We may have done the same; I was reading about the 1A diode trick and found Littlefuse 02400113P. I was curious what a 1.5A would put out so I tried 02400120P too, but got same results.

    Couldnt of said it better!

The JustDSM Tune does all of this, SO much smoother pull all the way through, the truck feels more lively and like weight has been lifted off it during cruising speeds. Responsiveness is so much better with the different pedal mapping, Cant say much for MPG GAINZ due to lots of testing of ACIS pulls and not a whole lotta driving.

I have a trip coming up that Ill be towing a small jetski trailer and camping gear up a good deal in elevation (everything is uphill from where i live all of 100ft above sealevel). So it will be interesting to see what MPG numbers will be.

On top of the JustDSM tune i have been messing with auto trans shift point mapping to eliminate some of the quirks of our 5spd auto.

EDIT - Going to do some work this weekend on a rather big excel doc that will help out greatly for anyone who is doing Auto trans shift point tuning. Stay TUNED for that *ba dum tiss*
