Rear differential oil change...

I have an 07 pre runner 4.0v6 4D DCLB that doesn't have a locker, trac control, and none of that good stuff haha. I've thought I've read before if I don't have the LS sticker on it, I don't use it. If I am on the right track, what should I get in the

75w-90?? I wanted Mobil 1 but it only comes in LS -_-

 

Brand dont really matter just get the proper viscosity

 

Do the diff breather mod even if you don't dunk the diff in water to normalize the pressure in the diff, then put in redline 75-140 and forget about it for 150 000 miles.

75 90 Mobil 1 is fine. Make sure you remove the fill plug prior to opening the drain plug. Process is simple as can be and should take you no more than 15 mins. Make sure to check the magnet on the plug and note any metal attached. Wipe it clean and replace..

 

An easy way to fill the rear diff is to remove the spare tire. It may sound weird but it makes it really easy to access the differential fill hole without having to use a pump. Also, it gets you familiar with the inner workings of the spare tire, cable etc...and don’t forget to check air pressure in the spare while you’re down there.

 

^^This is the way I do it as well. Makes it way easier to get the 3.1 quarts of diff fluid in there if you can pour straight from the bottle and don't have to use a pump. It's also a good time to coat the spare tire mechanism and cable with fluid film.

 

Another vote for taking the spare tire down. Just did mine for the first time Tuesday, and I didn't....but as I layed there pumping 1/1000th (seemed like) of a quart of oil per pump, I had a lot of time to think about that...next time, the spare will be down.

Oh yea, I think I've read somewhere that even if you don't NEED the LS additive, it don't hurt anything if it's already in the oil you use....but before you believe that, wait for some more opinions because I'm not sure where I saw it (other than on this website...somewhere), and I could have misunderstood or I could be remembering wrong.

 

I’m pretty sure that the friction modifier is ok in a non LS Diff. Went to the Mobile 1 site and used their “oil finder” with your truck info and it came up in the list.
Just curious if your fuel door hinge is failing like mine (same year) at the hinge. Also what is the star on your door about.

LS additive in a non clutch pack LS diff is perfectly fine, I use mobil 1

75w-90 full syn with LS additive or Vavoline 75w-90 full syn with LS additive depending on which is cheaper in my TRD OR with the locker (just an open diff) and no issues.

CRACK THE FILL PLUG FIRST, you dont wanna drain the diff if you cant fill it!

 

I don’t get this, I poured literally from the bottle and didn’t remove the spare tire at all. Had no leaking from the bottle and plenty of room to tilt it up. Fill up took like 3 mins

 

dropping the spare tire is quick, should be done to make sure that the spare tire mechanism isnt frozen, allows you to top off pressure in the spare and make sure job easier, Dunno why you wouldnt take the 2 min to drop it.

 

I dunno. Different trucks I guess. When my quart bottle hit the spare, the bottle was just level, at best...maybe even still down a little. So I had to go to plan B...pump it .

 

Because if it’s not necessary during a fluid change, then not going to. All that spare checking is fine and dandy, but that doesn’t mean I gotta add to what little time I have to spare.

 

I like to use these. Have one for diffs and one for trans and transfer case.

^^^nice tool. I’d buy that if I was maintaining a fleet. I just use one of those long neck funnels with a hose attached to it. I filled the front diff and trans from under the hood. Rear diff from the rear wheel well.
