I couldn't agree more. Mistakes were made. You live and you learn.

If it’s an auto I’d run 4.88 gears. It’ll make it a much better experience all around with how over geared the auto is, especially when loaded down with weight.

I've been looking into 5.29 vs. 4.88 regearing...seems like it helps overall and with hauling/carrying extra weight.

If you are stock or a size up, go 4.88. If you are going bigger go 5.29

You can call BS all you want. The numbers don't lie. Trucks don't get MPG, people do. Check my sig if you care to examine more details or if not, you can stick with your misguided belief that we're full of BS.

I bet you catch fish "THIS BIG" too!! LOL It is just hard to believe when I baby mine to no end and am lucking to average in the 15's. Your data could be garbage also. It only reads out what you input. I would love to hear more about your driving conditions and topo outlay in the area you are in.

I pulled a car hauler with a 67 c10 swb truck in it for 300 miles in my 17 orlb. Only problem I had was trying to keep it at 65mph. It’ll run along in 4th gear fine and find 5th occasionally but I don’t live in the mountains either, so. The truck is rated for well above what your going to tow with it. I wouldn’t have an issue towing that airstream regularly with the correct setup, antisway, trailer brake control, etc.

It will be slow going but doable. Not ideal though.

Oh I get it now. You're one of those people who believes that it can't be your fault so you point your finger elsewhere. So everyone who is getting good mpg must be liars and cheats right? You won't believe my data and yet you offer nothing but a vague complaint of getting poor mpg and your claim of it not being your fault. Look in the mirror, that is where the poor mpg comes from.

I'm going on a year in with an average of 15.6. If you speed where I live you get pulled over. Period. With the exception of the drive home from the dealership, the truck hasn't seen 70mph.
I seldom have anything in the bed, and have done a single, one time 60 mile haul of a large wood chipper.
Running stock size Nitto Ridge Grapplers.

What PSI are you keeping? May want to try increasing a few pounds to see if any improvement shows.

I commute 86mi round trip, 90% on interstate with 70 and 65mph posted speed limit. I tend to drive 9mph over with flow of traffic. averaging between 19.5 and 20.8 mpg when I take the taco to work...and have had 33s, with bolt on sliders.

when I tow I average (usually doing similar drive and roads) I average 11mpg and tend to stay closer to posted speed limit. yes like mentioned above, 4th will be your primary gear once over 35/40mph... just learn that those racing 4th gear rmps are " normal"

Yet you completely dodged my question. Tell me about your Topo, Driving condtions and your habits. Who is vague? I am trying to figure out how to improve.

HackSawMark, I get his average. If I drove this much highway I could see getting what he gets. That is why I am trying to clarify your conditions and Topo.

I drive mostly in the Portland metro area, primarily west of the city and parts south. A lot of back country roads and usually no more than 5 mph over speed limit. One trip per week into downtown Portland for my job and an occasional trip into the Cascades or the Columbia River Gorge.

I've never had a camper salesman be honest with me about pulling trailers. So I always test pull with my tow rig before I buy.
That said, I would NOT pull a 4,800lb dry weight trailer in the mountains with a Taco. I don't think it's unsafe, I just think it would be miserable being in 3rd gear all the time at 8pmg.

Also, I don't think you'll be able to get to a safe tongue weight without going over GVWR if that matters to you.
