5 tire rotation

    So I went up to 255/85 r16s, and got a nice matching TRD OR rim for the 5th tire. I was planning on putting the spare in the stock location, but don't want to scratch the rim! What are others doing to keep their nice spare rims protected?

    Not really looking to go with a swing out, or keep the spare in the bed.

    spray the snot out of it with wd 40 or perhaps even fluid film

    periodically remove the wheel, clean it thoroughly and reapply a heavy coat of wd40 or fluid film..


    this method will only help with grime though, not scratches....

    the trd or wheel is aluminum after all so, really not much to worry about IMHO

    Well, if u dont wanna keep it in the bed or get a swingout, and ur afraid to put it under the truck.... Whats left?

    Id put it under the truck face up and make sure the rim face indeed doesnt touch anything.

    Hmmm, this would almost certainly mean doing my own tire rotations, cause I doubt any tire shop would clean the wheel for me before installing it, and lube up the one going into the spare position.

    Probably better than nothing though.

    That's what we're about to find out!

    I think the problem is that the rim has to go one way, which is rim face down and the plate will scratch the face. I'm not under the truck at the moment though, the shop that mounted my tires just called and asked what I wanted to do.

    That was in reply to uurx above, who suggested heavy grease on the rim face before install.

    I have my 17 rim face up. Another member here donated a wheel spacer that I sandwich between the clamp and the wheel. I also had some high density foam sitting around that I cut into a big donut to protect the face/tire of the wheel. No problems after 5k miles so far.

    Alright, this is the kind of stuff I was thinking!

    Any chance you have a pic of the wheel spacer? Where'd you get the foam? I might have a pool noodle laying around...

    It was a Chinese 3/4" spacer with our bolt pattern. No marking or name on it. I cut up one of the rubber mats you can get at a tractor supply as a pad to protect the face and tire from damage.

    Piggy backing off your thread, but I just switched my OR to 17’s. I got 5 new KO2s and I’m trying to decide whether I should mount the 5th to a new steel spare wheel or get a 5th matching wheel and do a 5 wheel rotation.

    Any recommendations?

    I have 5 matching rims and tires. I have a 5 wheel rotation done each 5k miles. No problems with the rim being scratched.

    Anything you mount under the truck will take a beating. The wheel (notice it is called a wheel, not a rim) if mounted face up will have contact with something that will rub regardless of what you do. If you mount the wheel (again, it is a wheel. The rim is outer part of the wheel that the tire mounts on) face down then every rock on the road will bounce up and beat the hell out of it. I would either stick with the stock spare and keep the new spare in the garage to make part of the rotation or just skip the idea all together.

    Im curious how many people have had to use their spare and realized it was mysteriously destroyed.
    I just dont get it.

    Face up the tire sidewall will keep the rim face from touching anything, whens the last time u heard your spare get secured under the truck and heard the rim touch metal? Face up will keep debris from most damage.

    If there was a real danger of the rear tires flinging high speed bojangles at the spare tire and damaging it or the rim, wouldnt the gas tank be at risk too?

    Probably ignorant question, but if you have 17" wheels and something like 275/70 R17 tires, is it going to affect something in your vehicle if you blow tire, and have to use your stock tire for a Tacoma OR which I think are 16" wheels and smaller tires?

    I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. But I think you're wondering if you upgrade tires would it be bad to use a spare that was a different size, like the original stock size you used to have.

    You can get away with it if it's a small difference, but should avoid driving like that as much as you can. It'll wear out your differential much faster. And definitely DO NOT go into 4wd or lock your diff like that.

    Best practice, make sure your tires are all the same size.
